Salary deductions

I finished working for a company 3 weeks ago, and I was expecting a salary payment at the end of June.
I have just been told that there will be deductions from my salary over (disputed) money I owe the company.
Are they allowed to take deductions from my final salary payment?
Are they allowed to pay me late? The money should have gone in at the end of June.
Thanks..

What did your contract say about their being able to make deductions from your pay?
What is the dispute about? Is it whether you were due to repay them some kind of loan or training cost or expense advance?0 -
Never had a contract.
The dispute is a fine for congestion charge, and a scratch on a company car. There was never a company car policy0 -
In that case I'd say these were unlawful deductions, and no they shouldn't be paying you late.Signature removed for peace of mind0

The scratch is an insurance job and small court claim if the OP was neglient in causing it.
The charge is his and he should pay it.
Why does the OP think he should be able to damage a company vehicle and incur fines and get away with it.
Does he want to let me borrow his car and let me damage it and incur fines for him to pay?0 -
I meant to post last night and ask the OP if he was driving at the time of the congestion charge, or if it's that which is in dispute. But I still think these MAY be unlawful deductions if the company has not put in writing that they WILL make them.Signature removed for peace of mind0

Did you incur the charge by driving in the C zone and not paying; and did you scratch the car? Are you saying that you didn't do these or that because there is no policy you shouldn't pay?0 -
Its irrelevant whether I should pay these charges or not. I just wanted to check that you cannot have money deducted from your salary without prior agreement. You can't.0

Interesting. Have you ever had a company car? It is very difficult to have a car for a year, and drive 35,000 miles and bring it back as new.0 -
As dudes says if a contract has never been signed or a document that states they can deduct this money from pay then the deduction is unlawful under the Employment Rights Act.
I would write to them and state this and propose to take it further if you are not paid money owed.0 -

Thanks. This is the case. These deductions are more than half of my salary payment, I just can't see how they are legal.0
