Soon we'll be launching a full guide to carbon offsetting. This is the place to suggest aspects & products you think we should look into, and just generally discuss the topic.
I was talking to an environmentist and she was saying we must remember we are coming out of an iceage so off course it's getting warmer. Didn't the UK used to be a desert millions of years ago anyway?
As of last year there was only one charity offering carbon offsetting for flights (PURE?? - must check as I think they changed their name).
The rest of them are profit making organisations. NOT that that is necessarily a bad thing, but indicative that it's an industry that could attract people with the wrong intentions....
So you pay money to mainly private companies to carbon offset. Who polices or audits these companies? If I pay them £25 to carbon offset who is to say that one of the companies will claim to have planted trees and not done so?
To me it's like creating an industry in which no-one knows what happens and no-one can tell what happens. A bit like the public sector being a self-serving machine in creating useless public sector jobs.
Scam. I bet some big scandals will blow up in the future about this.

In the travel industry, carbon offsetting is a fact of life and has been for a few years now. It's going to play a big role in business taxation in coming years so many companies are getting a grip on the basics now.
And for everyone who doesn't believe that this issue affects them...what c.c. car do you drive? Have you ever chosen to buy a smaller car because the road tax is cheaper? Has your car ever failed it's MOT based upon carbon emmissions or do you already pay to have that checked before the MOT?
Drivers are already being taxed on carbon emmissions so why not big businesses?
Neither do I. Actually got rid of my car last week but will be saving up for something better.
The point I'm to make is that it really doesn't matter whether or not you believe in global warming and carbon offsetting...the vast majority of us are already being taxed on it!
Don't get me wrong... My next car will be a hulking great 2lt like the last one, but I will pay through the nose for it and I'm happy to pay that. I've yet to see safety features that can replace having a decent impact zone on a car, but at least I am making an informed choice and am prepared to pay for it.
My balance will be that I'm also saving up to have two wood burning stoves installed as that is repeatedly being touted as the most eco-friendly way to heat my home.

I consider myself pretty eco-friendly and try to avoid flying where possible, ie train to Europe. However, life is too short to restrict yourself too much in this way. I really want to go to Japan and I would in this case offset my carbon emission. I do all I can to keep my carbon footprint low otherwise and wouldn't feel too guilty about a plane trip once in a while.
British Airways was the first airline to introduce a voluntary passenger carbon offsetting scheme in 2005. We have made it easy for you to offset the impact of your journey when buying a ticket with us on ba.com.
Contributions are automatically calculated based on the volume of carbon dioxide your flight produces and the cost of carbon credits per tonne at the time of your booking. Payments can be made, safely and securely, via credit or debit card with all proceeds going towards certified carbon emission projects.
The money raised helps fund projects such as hydro-electric power plants and wind farms around the world that reduce the amount of carbon emitted.
These projects also have health and social benefits, so by making offset contributions you can have a positive effect on communities as well as neutralising emissions from flying.
My opinion is that carbon offsetting is just another name for a tax. I have never paid it and whilst it is voluntary I never will.
Carbon credits, carbon off setting, renewable power from windmills(the most unreliable, unpredictable form of energy production, but expensive for taxpayers/consumers -- very lucrative for installers)
Man Made Global Warming we are told will melt the ice caps and flood London, New York, Bangladesh, Florida etc. To stop this from happening there is a very simple solution - PAY MORE TAX, I'd say everyone living in low lying areas need to get out there and fly, fly, fly -- pay as much carbon tax as you can or your homes are going to be under melting ice cap waters!!!??!??
