Airmiles Tips Needed

I have started to save up airmiles this month. I've opened an airmiles account, got myself a Tesco clubcard and myself and my OH have each got the airmiles duo cards from Lloyds TSB.

We have started shopping online for our food and petrol at Tesco (using both our club card and airmiles credit card for double points) and have 3000 miles on the way from taking out our cards with Lloyds. (Miles take 35 days to reach your account)

So it is safe to say we are on our way to our holiday in Florida in 2 years time :)

Does anyone have any tips to help us boost our balance? I hope to afford both tickets with the airmiles (10,000) but at worst am sure we will at least cover the one! (5000)

Any help or advice from fellow airmiles collectors would be much appreciated! And I hope to help other people starting our their collecting like me.

Thanks :p

  • I think I'd check the terms and conditions of the 'free airmiles' as I think it is a voucher for 1500 miles if you use before a certain date and book a hotel for a night. If I were you I'd use these on a holiday to Europe, and look at just collecting Tesco vouchers towards a Florida holiday with Virgin.

If you're still set on doing airmiles then have a look at their website for online shopping stuff

You will get much better value out of your airmiles (cash price compared to air miles price) if you use them on the more "unusual routes" rather than UK to Florida, New York or Paris.

3000 miles should get you and partner to prague or budapest and back. paris is probably less.

    all amazing cities.

I didnt get many using the credit card. I had a good run on tesco points though and now have about 9000 airmiles.
  • You may do better with the Tesco clubcard points (I initially got into Tesco points as I wanted to get airmiles flights) For example if you wanted to get 10,000 airmiles from clubcard deals you'd need £435 of vouchers. This could alternatively give you about £1,700 towards a holiday with Virgin for the two of you (I looked in June 2009 and you could get a 7 night holiday for £1,500 - including accomodation).

I'm looking at airmiles too, and looked into the above. You do indeed get a better deal agains Virgin or Cosmos, but, there is a minimum of 7 nights stay, so would rule out short hols (Paris, NY etc). Of course, may help a Florida hol!

Anyway, is AM the best way to go for free flights? I havnt got enough for a Virgin/Cosmos hol, but have enough to convert to AM for flights to NY and back, but then of course, you have to add hotels etc.

    Any advice?
  • Personally I'm not convinced that airmiles are the way to go with clubcard points - especially not to New York. At the minute BA are offering flights for £318 cash (whereas the airmiles are about £216 in vouchers). It depends when you want to go but you can get flight and hotel with Virgin (7 nights of course though) for £700 in February (£175 in vouchers).

Thanks for the feedback especially about the 3000 miles which do need to be used up by next year! Oh well I guess we will have to have a holiday before we got to florida hehe.

I have signed up for all the Tesco clubs to get some extra points and mum has even offered to link her Tesco card with our account so she can save for us. I'm also going to do all my christmas shopping online through the airmiles site with my airmiles credit card.

I will post more tips as I find them :)
