I'm an RT - How many cards should I have ?

in Credit cards
I have amassed four credit cards now, through continuously relocating a £5K debt through 0% deals to avoid paying interest. (The 5K is currently in a savings account earning 5.3%)
What concerns me, is that, eventually they are going to catch up with me. The old cards are sitting there in the draw, pretty much unused. I was advised that they are a valuable source of readies if you ever lose your job, but now I'm worried that they will compromise my ability to continue on the free money trail. Will it help if I cancel them ?
