  • The Vairiable Servicing is exactly that, variable! Depends how the car gets driven. Stop, start, stop, start = service often. Long, steady runs = longer service intervalls...

A BMW on our fleet at the minute is doing 22,000 miles between services and it's on its original rear tyres and rear pads cos it just sits on the motorway day in, day out...

Its now on 80,000 miles in 2 years...
  • Same thing happened to me this morning. VW 1.4 2002. Did you find out which oil was needed? If not, I'll check with VW garage later.

    To repeat myself.....

Just because it beeped does not mean you have low oil. You could have too much in there.

When it beeped how fast were you going?
Check your oil dipstick when parked on level ground. <--- DO THIS NOW, if you do have low oil, it sounds like you are driving around trying to save a couple of quid and you could be doing 100s of £££s worth of damage to your engine in the process.

    Any 10 - 40 oil will do, There's no need to have (more expensive) 5 - 40.
  • Amazing as it may seem but I did check the oil (& it was too low). No problemo except I didn't have the handbook so I googled for oil type and it offered a link back to (amongst others) good ol' MSE.

I few minutes research enabled me to verify that semisynthetic 10-40 is ok.

Thanks for your concern however "should be good enough" did not give me the initial reassurance I needed (having said that, the VW dealer also gave me the wrong spec suggesting I needed a PD oil when it's actually a petrol engine - tho' they did profusely apologise when I queried it).

i would be putting in 5w 30,this is the oil recommended by vw for this engine, dont put in 10w 40,these engines are still prone to sludge, put in the 5w 30 to help avoid this problem.

Branches of GSF (German, Swedish & French) used to sell VW's own brand of oil, 'Quantum'. Unfortunately they don't stock it anymore but they do stock 'Fuchs' brand oil. This is a good quality oil & GSF sell it a a reasonable price.
  • The oil code will be printed on the back of the oil you buy. For instance, my car recommends MB229.1, so I buy Mobil 1 0w-40 which has MB229.1 and MB229.3 printed on the label.

    Very simple.

You don't have to understand the code, just buy oil that has the same code printed on it as Pew Pew Pew Lasers suggested.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
