First bank account for my 12 year old

My 12 year old daughter is keen to get a bank account with a debit card for birthday, christmas and small amounts of pocket money. I've had a search around but wondered if any MSE readers had any advice for us.

Thanks

Santander do an 11-15 bank account with visa electron card, online banking facilities.

No chequebook and no way of going overdrawn.

It also pays 3% up to £500 for 12 months or 5% if you have your main account with Santander.

Very simple accounts to open, one form and either a passport or medical card + birth certificate.
  • Lloyds TSB do a very good account also

Santander for top rate and iffy service.

Lloyds TSB for service with a half decent rate.

There isn't much that can go wrong with a Youth Account, any branch that cocks that up shouldn't really be operating.

Only thing that could go wrong is Head Office don't send the card/ pin out.

Not unknown and very frustrating for us in branches.

See the 80 or so customers currently waiting over 4 weeks for their cheque books to arrive.
  • there are many banks to chose from for a 12 year old, many have debit cards. here are a few...
    -natwest
    -ulster bank
    -rbs
    -barclays
    -hsbc
    -santander
    -lloyds tsb
    -halifax
    -bank of scotland
    -nationwide (building society)
-yorkshire building society (both come with cashcard)
    -yorkshire bank
    -clydesdale bank
  • My 12yr old has a Natwest Adept account which is great. You get a visa debit card so can be used in shops/online etc. You can choose your own design for the card. Also discounts on certain shops, i.e game shops, high street shops etc.
The only thing you don't get is online banking until you are 16 but other than that it is a great account and my eldest is delighted with it.
