DWP compensation recovery unit?

Hi, there I have just received a cheque for £2935 for a personal injury claim as a result of a car accident nearly two years ago.

I banked the cheque today but have received a letter today at my old address, the person who picked it up read the first line of it through the envelope but has left the letter and told me it said it was from the compensation recovery unit.

What I'd like to know is am I liable to pay some/all of my claim to the dwp?

I have recently turned over onto contribution based income - someone on yahoo seem'd to think I would be expected to live off of my payment and sign off of JSA.

Would I have to pay what I have claimed while on JSA?

Has anyone else had a similar experience? - I have done some online research and found it very unclear.

Thanks!

Just to add I am signed onto JSA through loss of job not through injuries.
  • if you havent claimed benefits in connection with your compensation then AFAIK you wont have to repay anything

I hope this is the case, this money would help me get out of the debt I was put in after being hit by an uninsured driver before this accident took place(having to fork out for a new car out of my overdraft facility, and then losing my job) This money would be the ideal end to debt and two-nearly three years of debt worries and worries of insurance liability.

You are allowed to have up to 6k in savings so doubt you would need to pay anything back but it's difficult to say.

You need to get hold of the letter. Perhaps they want to know the amount received in compensation.

  • I recently won some compensation from a medical negligence case & had to pay back nearly £3K for DLA I received due to the negligence.

I guess it would depend on why you are claiming benefits & if it is linked to the injuries you sustained as you can't be compenated twice if you understand what I mean.

Did you lose your job as a result of the accident?

Wow - is that because DLA was awarded or part awarded based on the negligence causing health issues?

Nope I lost my job before the accident and got a job just before the accident but was waiting to start my new job, which was terminated due to 6 month contract thanks for your help guys and girls!

I was already getting DLA but due to the negligence I started getting MRC instead of LRC & had to pay back the difference.
