Vauxhall Combo 1.7 diesel wont start

Ok, hoping someone can help. Been driving us mad. My combo 1.7 diesel wont start.
Sequence of events:

New Starter Motor put on
Started ok and drove for 3 days. Last drive was for about 1.5 hrs. Turned engine off and it wouldn't start .....had to get a bump start and then only drove for 5 mins. Started up fine few hours later when used it again.
Starting was intermittent from there on in. Sometimes took 2-3 times of turning ignition to start.
Took it to get a new battery thinking this may be the problem. Wouldn't start after coming out of shop, so changed battery there and then. Started fine.
Drove for a couple of weeks all fine. Then same problem, wouldn't start. Had to bump start it to get it going.
New ignition switch put on. (someone suggested this could be blown)
Another new Starter Motor put on (thought maybe first new one was faulty)
Now still wont start.
Visually checked all electrical leads and fuses - all seem fine.
Glow plug light comes on and sometimes there is a clicking sound as the glow plug light goes off.
It is just dead, doesn't turn over or anything. Nothing there at all.
Had a new alternator 10 mths ago.
Had a new clutch 6 mths ago.

Can anyone help/advise?

Take it to a good auto electrician to be checked over properly. Sounds like you have a short or a stuck relay that is draining the new battery.
  • The new battery seems fine.....lights are bright. Its not being drained.
Think as you say auto electrician the way to go.

When fault is on check for feed on starter solenoid cable (small one) could be a loom fault not uncommon for the isuzu lump to suffer engine harness probs

Worth opening up the ECU (yes really.)

These used to get a really common non-start fault caused by a wonky joint on the PCB. It's pretty clear once you get the lid off the ECU.

New or reconditioned? Everything is pointing to the alternator.
  • My Astra Van MK3 1700 N/A ran for weeks with no Alternator belt on it...Everything was Mechanical so running wise alternater wasn't needed....

Started fine everything worked great.... Only put a belt on when towards the end of the Summer when the light nights started fading.

So firstly what year is it?
  • Its a 1997 Combo and the Alternator was new.
  • Presumably when you say it won't start, you mean it won't even turn over?

In which case it's an electrical problem, and if not a job for a Vauxhall forum, one for an auto electrician.

Starter solenoid?I had a '91 astramax with the 1.7d engine many moons ago and it had this problem.Until I changed the starter, a big lump of wood to whack the starter helped and also rocking the car sometimes freed it.
