does anyone know how chip shops make their gravy? I know its a northern thing but can anyone give me advice on making gravy like we get at chippys up here. I know its powder based but where and what do i use for the ultimate chippy gravy.
thanks in anticipation and drooling at the thought!!

    Hi broggsy,

I don't have a recipe for chip shop gravy but a quick look on google threw up these links

Also these Old Style threads may help:

Making gravy when you haven't had a roast. How?

    Decent gravy please.

I'll add your thread to the first Old Style link later.

Could do with asking someone who works at a chippy?

Maybe they'll tell you where it's bought from?

is often used or dinaclass who do a couple of flavours - well - plain and onion but they usually sold wholesale... erm...have you tried makro ??

  • Its just been bisto bought in bulk from makro or costco where I've worked.
maybe try adding more powder and messing with it a bit.

It sits in a steam bath for hours after its made, to keep it hot, so maybe that thickens it up a bit.
It only takes a second to say 'Thanks, you just saved me a few quid!'

I use Bisto gravy powder (not the instant granules) and make it quite thick.

Gravy sauce MAYSAN concentrated sauce paste from various places including chinese supermarkets. About 1.20 to 1.50 (I think I paid 1.35 last time) for a plastic container with 448g. To use whisk 85g into 1 pint of cold water. Bring to the boil and serve. Less than 30p a pint, not as cheap as Bisto, but a lot cheaper than getting the same from the chip shop.

Also have curry sauces, mild, original, extra hot. We use these to add to left over meat when we want a quick 'Chinese chip shop curry' instead of making our own Indian types from scratch.

And it keeps for ages as the concentrate.

Just noticed that approved foods has it for 1.50
