No Claims Discount, how long does it last?

Does anyone know how long your no claims bonus lasts for on car insurance?I had 6 years with Tesco but sold my car in Oct 2005 and am now looking at buying another motor but dont know if my no claims are still valid.
TIA

2 years with most companies but some companies will acccept it up to years.

It might be worth asking Tescos if they would allow you any no claims bonus

i phoned around a few companies the beginning of last year, and all said 2 years, (i sold my car in jan last year and started car sharing with my dad to cut costs and wanted to see what the affect of my 5 years no claims would be if i were not to get a car again for a few years, ) just a hint to anyone like us, we ended up going with norwich union i think (dad as ph me as nd, but they were made aware that its a car sharing arrangement), they advised they would take note of my 5 yrs no claims(and asked me to send proof with dads) and that as they did a no claims for named drivers when the nd would take their own insurance with them, it wouldnt have an effect (ie 5 years before plus for instance if i am with them for 3 yrs as nd would still acrue no claims etc) the only catch will be that the first time i get insurance again for myself as ph, will have to go with Norwich union for the first full year
