I had missed call from the 1st number last week,i rang it to , to hear a answering machine say contecting your call, i quickly hung up. the 2nd number today( Monday) .
I was worried i was missing important calls so i googled both the numbers and found this site.

""This entry is for google to pick up - If you get a call on your mobile from this number (08700 426 655) do not call it back.

When you answer it - the line will go dead - if you call it back you could be calling a premium rate number (no I didnt do it luckily - it looked odd so I researched it) or it could also be a dodgy telecom company auto-dialing loads of people at once (this practice is borderline illegal - depending on how many people they drop whilst doing it - some companies have been fined) so that their sales staff are fed constant calls to cold sell to.

It seems (and I have other reasons why I suspect) that at sometime Orange mobile sold my mobile phone number to somebody. Obviously then that list gets sold on and sold on again etc. Not a good thing to do for a large company such as themselves.""

If you called the 0870 number then the rate shouldn't be extortionate ;) it can't connect you to a more expensive number than the 0870 costs.
  • In the last month had two cold calls from:

02081742742 ( Believed from Syntec Uk...again!!) -as soon as you answer a recorded message comes on advertising a mobile phone!

01214252025-soon as you answer a recorded message comes on for a mobile phone!

Getting FFFFFFFed up of these calls!

Mobile numbers are sold on about 18 months after they are last used by the previous owner. They are supposed to be 'cleaned' but this doesn't always happen. My son bought a brand new mobile with PAYG T mobile. His first £5 top up was gobbled up by a !!!!!! firm subscribed to by the previous owner. The telephone shop (TMobile, Worcester) did not want to know and said it was for me to sort out with TMobile! I phoned ICTIS and they supplied what they call a 'short code' so I was able to get a refund from the !!!!!! firm as sending this kind of message to someone who doesn't want it is illegal, particularly on a fifteen year old's phone. It took the best part of a day to sort all this out. We were also promised a refund of £4.80 from TMobile but this was never honoured.

""Do you know you can register mobile telephone numbers?

The Telephone Preference Service can accept the registration of mobile telephone numbers, however it is important to note that this will prevent the receipt of live marketing voice calls but not SMS (text) messages. This is because under the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2004 it is unlawful to send an unsolicited sales and marketing text message. Telemarketing companies who send SMS messages need your prior permission. There is no obligation therefore for companies sending SMS messages to people who have agreed to receive them, to screen against the TPS file. If you wish to stop receiving SMS marketing messages, please send an 'opt-out' request to the company involved. The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) is responsible for the enforcement of these regulations. Please click on the useful links page for their details.""
