wouldn't you use the country code for the USA and then drop the 1 ?

Yeah, just dial 00 1 800 xxx xxxx

However, may I suggest you use Pre-Dial on 01635 578 562, at the prompt dial as above - but if using a mobile do not press the call button again.

This will allow you to call the US for the same price as a UK landline.
  • the country code for the usa is 01...

I think all you'd need to do is dial +01800[.....]

    maybe drop the first 0

That's what I did last time I (successfully) called one.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

You dial 00 1 800 xxx xxxx as indicated above BUT be aware that this call will NOT be toll free from a normal UK landline. You will get a message warning you of that before the call is completed.

    No,

The country code for the USA is 1
The international dial out number in the UK is 00

    So you dial 00 1 800

When you dial non-local in the US you have to add a 1 to the beginning of the number - so 202 123 4567 becomes 1 202 123 4567. Sometimes (in the case of 1-800) the 1 is quoted too so just dial 00 followed by the rest of the number
