I am reading the posts with interest, unfortunately it seems there is no reference to a supplier in the South Lincolnshire area, anyone any suggestions please?

I have found the cheapest supplier for salt tablets for water softeners is watersoft.net

First post -praising a company ??? Wonder if anyone called Bobby works for them ?
We have a water softner on our supply, usual get 25kg bags of salt tablets from plumb centre. Give your local one a call and will order in for you about £10 per bag.

Neither of these companies are very cheap ....................

I am paying just under £5 for 25 kg of granular from an agricultural dealer - there are also a number of specialised salt dealers who give very good prices.

The best I can find for 25kg tablets is around £11 including delivery. I could and would collect if they were much cheaper though... any suggestions for the Kent area please?
  • Saw someone is using table salt in their water softner... Are people aware that water softner salf is Sodium Carbonate and NOT Sodium Chloride?
  • I just used Harrington's Gas of Reading again (0118 9242 888)who will deliver at £7 a bag for 10x or if you have the space £6 a bag for 40x bags.
You have to call but a nice chap on the phone.

Sodium Carbonate is washing soda ! DO NOT put that in a water softener. Softeners use SALT, which IS Sodium Chloride !

Sodium Carbonate is also slightly toxic - just for good measure !!!!!

A possible explanation for the incorrect post about not putting salt into a water softener.

Sainsbury's are selling packets of what appears to be their own label version of Calgon - labelled Water Softener Powder - VERY, VERY misleading !!
This could wreck a conventional water softener and possibly have toxic effects on the water from that softener.

It does say on the back in very small print "not for use in water softeners" - in that case, why is it labelled the way it is ???
  • Hi,

I've read the discussion with interest, but it's not clear if there are any issues with using Table Salt in a Water Softener?

Cheapest prices round here (North Herts) are:
    Block Salt (2 x 4kg blocks) is 64p/kg
Tablet Salt (25kg Bag) is 36p/kg
Table Salt (Tesco Value) is 23p/kg

    Can I use Table Salt?

    Thanks.

It's OK to use it as an emergency top up, but not all the time.

Table salt has additives in it to make it pour nicely, these won't do you any harm via the softener but prolonged use may have a negative effect on the resin in the softener.

Use granular or tablet salt for regular fills.
  • Just used my last bag of tablet salt, so had to do some research to find the cheapest supplier for a decent salt such as Hydrosoft. We've had a softener for a while, and each time I seem to go to a new supplier because the previous one is no longer supplying, or is no longer the cheapest.

Time before last, the cheapest I found was watersoftenersaltuk.co.uk, and it will still do you 10 x 25kg bags of tablet salt for £99 delivered. It said it would do 20 bags for under £160, but it turns out that's without VAT (i.e. £191 delivered)

Last time, I went to salt-supplies.co.uk for 10 bags at £95 delivered, and after an hour or so's searching, I've gone with them again. This time I'm going for 20 bags at £165 (i.e. £8.25 a bag) - luckily we've got the garage space to store it.

There don't seem to be as many countrywide deliveries around as there were: most seem to deliver only to their local area. Couldn't find any online to deliver to Yorkshire - you may be luckier if you live in the south of the country as I found several stretching from Norfolk to Somerset. Also I found the cheaper salt is often described as "partial solar": that means there's more likely to be insoluble bits in the salt which will more likely clog up your softener.

Just thought I'd feedback the fruits of my research - just dreading someone coming back and showing me somewhere I could have bought cheaper...;)
