The Literature Network is a brilliant site which provides free classic (i.e. out of copyright) texts online. The range includes novels, short stories, poetry, classical texts, non fiction etc
It's a shame the books aren't downloadable so you can't use them with the new readers, but you can copy and paste to word. Even if it's a bit impractical for reading huge novels, It's good for short stories and poetry, as well as for general reference. One good feature is that the texts are searchable so if you're desperately looking for a quote or passage from a book the site can be invaluable.
It also includes biographies of the authors, introductions to the texts, related links, user comments and forums.
I searched and can't believe it's not been posted before.

Gutenberg is also fantastic, I use it all the time for uni essays.
It's been posted before fairly recently which is why I didn't mention it. But it deserves a bump up too.0
