My old mans motability car is coming up to 3 years old and due to be handed back.

He re applied and was awarded the higher rate for 2 years.

What happens after those 2 years, does he apply again and if successful will he keep that car for another year to make it the 2. Or will he be able to get another new car.

Or would he be limited to choosing a car that's cost would be covered by 2 years of the benefit.

To lease a car through Motability you must have at least 12 months' award length remaining.
If it doesn't get renewed after that they just take the car back.

After the time period you mention he will have to claim for PIP[personal independence payment]has DLA is being terminated completely..as to whether he will qualify for the mobility component of PIP i suggest you Google it and discover the criteria for yourself.nothing is finalised yet but when they finally arrive at the finished article there is every chance that a substantial amount of existing benefactors will no longer qualify.

It depends how old the OP's father is as people over 65 are not being migrated to PIP.

What would happen if, after three years your car is due for renewal but you only have nine months remaining on your award? Would you just keep the existing car for the remainder?

They don't provide any guidance on this and would probably deal with it on an individual basis. They do extend agreements by up to 6 months although state that this is a 'flexible' 6 months.
  • In Nov his current car is due to be handed back, it will be 3 years old.

He has re applied and been awarded it again for 2 years, which I assumed will start in nov.

So assuming he gets a new car, what then happens in 2 years time. If he re applies and gets awarded it again will they extend that car for another year to make it 3years old. Or would he be eligible for another new car.

He is over 6 so I don't believe PIP applies
