Fibreglass flat roof

We have been quoted £1280 for a new flat roof. It will be fibreglass and measures approx 5 metres x 4. The quote includes removal of the old roof. The roofer says it will probably be only one day's work for two men. We live in Ramsgate, Kent. Does this seem a reasonable price ?

That isnt bad at all for that size in glass fibre. Be aware the quote is probably for a straight replacement so if any of the deck boards underneath need replacing its likely they will be extra.
  • Sounds good to me - are they a reputable company that are known to you?

As Alan says they MAY need to do additional replacements of substructure so it MAY be worth your while asking what the likely additional costs may be so that you (both) have an indication as to the max costs.

You should also get at least two additional quotes for your own MSE peace of mind!

  • Oh - and ask them about their waste licence thingy - you dont want to find they have dumped the old roof "up the lane" and you are being prosecuted as you are now responsible in law for this!

The quote includes "fixing new decking to rafters". Is that the same as "deck boards" ? (I'm not a v technical person!)

The roofer was recommended by the guy who fitted our kitchen (great job). I've had a quote for a 'Sarnafil' type roof which was similar in price, but the fibreglass roof seems better.

The price to me seems a bit high for just one day's work for 2 men, but maybe the materials are costly ?

Thanks for that. I'll ask though I don't think he's the irresponsible type.

    glass fibre is the best
we had a balcony roof done back in the summer and it is worth every penny.

you may think that £1280 is high for 1 days work but think of the work they have to do.
when we had ours done the guys were here from 8am till 6pm and they worked nonstop with just a few breaks for cups of tea.

Yes it is and if they are replacing the deck as well that quote is rather good !
  • Hi there, just to give u a tip I used a firm called fiberbase, they seem to be specialist in fiberglassed roofing. I have to admint I did not know too much about this material, but the sales person came round when I asked to know more about the service they offer and gave me all the info I needed, so I have become alot more wiser in the roofing game because of it lol... I was very impressed by the company I decided to use them and I have never looked back since either!

Fiberglass to me now is the only choice material it's a bit more costly then other's but at the same time the most durable and reliable. So I think if you want true peace of mind I would recommend this product! If you are still unsure however, drop me an email if want and I will be glad to be of help if I can...
  • Hi there guys

I have been in the fibreglass game for about twenty years now, the price you have been quoted is in my opinion, a fair one.:T

Its not just a case of the amount of work done in a day,its knowing how to do it properly - if done well it will pay off in the long run.
Yes you are right ,the raw materials are extremely expensive as they are linked to the oil industry.
We have notifications from the major suppliers about every three months or so advising of price increases.

    good luck
    regards
    Justin
