How to calculate a percentage in excel?

If anyone can help, please please do it in very simple terms. I'm struggling to get my head round excel things here. :rolleyes:

I have added up a column of numbers in an excel worksheet and got the total showing in a cell at the bottom.

So far so good, lol.

I now need to find out what 5% of the total is and show that in a cell underneath.

Then I want to add the two sub totals together (I can do that bit

).

So far I've been using a calculator and inserting the percentage amount manually, but there must be an easier way?

multiply the total by 0.05

ok. assuming your total is in the cell C10.
in the cell underneath, type =0.05*C10
change C10 to be the cell your total is actually in.
does that help?

If you need to show the percentage in a separate cell, then it needs a formula.
For talk's sake, the subtotal you already have is in cell F22.

In F24 (or wherever it is being displayed), you need to write =(F22/100)*5 - This gives you the 5% figure.
An alternative is =F22*0.05

If you just want to display the percentage and the subtotal in F22 added to give another figure, without needing to show the 5% figure, then you need something like: =F22+((F22/100)*5)
