Just another vote here for the Humax - It really is the best bit of kit I've bought in years (probably my life).

I realise that lots of people have said what Im about to say already, but this is the 1st time Ive ever had wisdom to impart so Im going to post anyway! Ive also got a Humax and it gets 2 big thumbs up from me. I took advice from a techie mate who said that basically Topfield and Humax were the top dogs in the PVR world but Humax were slightly cheaper so went for that. As others have said, it really is an amazing piece of electronic wizardry. One other thing to add - from speaking to mates who have bought cheaper makes (such as digifusion) it seems you do get extra features with the humax such as being able to search the TV guide by genre (incredibly handy for discovering those great movies tucked away in the wee hours of the morning that you would never have found otherwise).

I hate to agree with a cheesy tag line, but it really will change the way you watch TV

I have a Digihome 160gig PVR which are produced by Vestel. You can get these fairly cheap these days and to be honest, so far it's been fine. Does what it says it does. Mine is actually the old model T810, there is a new model out T816. Although mine is a Digihome brand, the same inside bits are found on those sold in Tesco (Tecknika), Asda (Dual), Wharfdale and a fair few more. I think the ones in Argos and Asda and even Tesco are now ~£99 for the 160gig model.

Hi thanks for all the replies, very helpful!
But i'm very new to all this stuff as we got the sky installed and have had it for ages, even though we have had a freeview box in a different house it was all very basic then!! So we have a sky box, dish etc BUT we got it turned off like another poster said so we still recive the free channels at the mo, we don't want sky where we are going.
    Basically in a nutshell:
We want to be able to record tv downstairs
Want to watch it upstairs aswell, does this need another box or an eye thing like we have for the sky? will the current one work? not worried about recording as we can use a dvd player upstairs..yeah?!
Daughter has her own ready to plug in for occasional tv so won't worry about her!! and we have playstaion 2 that we currently use for dvd player..really we want the least boxes wires etc as poss...
Thanks and hope that's not too confusing!

same here. We made the mistake of buying a Sony first as we have always bought Sony in the past thinking it is a good make. However, when we got the Sony home we found it did not actualy do what was listed on the box and was basically a bit of a let down. We changed it for a Humax (apparently Which magazine gave it top marks) and it is absolutely excellent. First class piece of equipment and easy to use.

With the Humax you can export the recording to a pc and then dvd with some software. You can also record to channels and possibly watch a 3rd channel or playback a recording and record two depending on what channels are being recorded.

The EPG is brilliant you can sort by genre or program which I find very useful and also skip adverts by clicking a button which skips by default 30 secs

Good morning: I can answer one of your questions...you can buy Humax online from John Lewis http://www.johnlewis.com/Search/Search.aspx?SearchTerm=humax&Offset=1&refined=0 ( free 2 year warranty)..go through Quidco to save more ££. They also sell them at Comet http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/search.do?n=0&searchTerm=humax

Is there a machine that does freeview records to hard drive & dvd discs.
Which also plays most fromats eg.dvd + - ram divx avi jpeg mp3?

If so that would be worth having.
Under my tv looks like a Comet store and only me knows how to use most of it.

Is there a solution to this?
