The AA 'gold membership, what it is??

My AA renewal has come through and they have upgraded me (for free apparently) to a gold member to recognise my loyalty. However my renewal fee has rocketed, £60+ more than if i was joining as a new member, doest sound much like loyalty rewards to me!).

There doesnt seem to be too much information on the website other than 'enhancements' to your membership.

Does anyone know what the extras are, and are they worth it?? Otherwise i may cancel and rejoin/join the RAC.

thanks :)

Call them up and tell them you are leaving unless they can match the price on-line to new members, make it very clear they have little time to persuade you as you have already a quote from the RAC.
trust me they will drop the price.

  • I was intending to try that. I did this last year, and they dropped the price, as we hadn't called them out... however this year they have been called out. I was just intrigued as to what the free ugrades are...

Myself and my father hold a family policy with the AA, had the same problem as you, renewal for both was approx £180 with the Gold Membership, phoned at first to downgrade cover to recovery & relay as we already had this, if not we were going to leave, after a little wrangling he let us keep the Gold Membership for £105 (£52.50 each), to answer your question as to what the upgraded membership really gives you, god only knows, but at that price we ripped his arm off.

    Good Luck

AA upgraded our membership too...and the renewal cost jumped by £70.

Quick phone call later and we'd shed the 'free' extras that we didn't want or need and went back to the cover we had previously and at new customer cost.

Can't remember what all the extras were though.

Btw, I call them every year to get them to drop their renewal cost whether we've called them out during the year or not.
Herman - MP for all! :)
  • I too had my renewal notice through for payment by direct debit. For my 19 years loyalty I was being upgraded to Gold membership. The annual subscription had gone up by £126, yes that's right, 70% increase! I called them and they agreed to honour last year's fee. How many people just signed their cards and didn't notice the massive increase?

RAC are much better imho. If you want recovery and don't mind paying and claiming back afterwards, AutoAid are good at £38 for a couple per annum.
  • I don't know if its any use  but I found this on the web site:

    www-theaa-com/breakdown-cover/membership-benefits/new-members.jsp

    AA Silver and Gold Membership

Breakdown cover for up to 3 other people living with you who are under 17
