Fords tend to be pretty good on cam belt life, if it says 100,000, you have a good chance of making that - unlike Vauxhalls !
You'd think that of Lexus too.............

It's a rubber belt. It may last ten years, it may last fifteen if you're lucky. It may go tomorrow.
So you may be wasting £180 if you do it every five years rather than ten, or you could leave it and scrap the car if it goes.
I change any of mine at 60,000, or 5 years, or as per the manufacturer if it's less.

Try Tremona in Southampton. I have my 56 Focus serviced there. Excellent people who know their stuff. Ford trained technicians who don't rip you off.

My services have cost me about 75% of the local Hendy Stealership.Full service stamp. Even though it is an extra 30 minutes drive for me(from Portsmouth) I don't mind. My last service (50,000 which I forgot to sort out sooner) I booked on the Thursday and they squeezed me in on the Monday first thing before anything else they had on.

    And no I don't work there.........lol

    Anyway, it's worth a call

Hi, thanks for the helpful comments people :)

I have always taken it to the main Ford dealer since new and had any anything they have suggested done to it which has occasionalluy resulted in VERY high bills. Last year was the first time I wandered from the handbook instructions and as it was under 50,000 they said it shouldn't be a problem to put off the Major Service, it is actually only on 58,000 miles now and I was wrong yesterday, I had an interim service not a value one.

I know the importance of having my car serviced and I have been a little side tracked this year, buying your first property and looming redundancies aren't a good mix!
I shouldn't have said I couldn't afford it, I can find the money if I need to, I just thought £300 was a high starting point and did not want to call other garages until I understand what needs to be included in the service.

I have tried asking at work and someone is going to try and find out where the company cars are taken.

    Thanks, Sarah

May be you can get a good deal with the company cars. I think £300 is high, Ford parts are very reasonable. Did you try googling for a Ford independent in your area? Although I always think word of mouth is the best way to find a garage that you can trust.

Fordwise in Southampton its pretty much all Hendys with sites in Shirley Road, and Chandlers Ford. Sparshatts in Botley is now a Ford authorised repairer and have been for a couple of years but their prices are pretty similar.

There are a few smaller Ford dealers worth trying Rayco of Romsey springs to mind. Previous poster mentioned Tremona in Southampton.

Tremona applied to become Ford authorised a few years ago but were not accepted (due to political reasons) but the team down there are top notch when it comes to Fords. They tend to specialise in older and american cars from memory and couldnt believe they were not signed up.

Another option is call Keith Motors down in Christchurch. See if they still do their GOLD service for 3 year plus cars - ask to speak to the service manager explain your situation and am sure they will do something for you.

In terms of quality all the hampshire Ford dealers are pretty good service wise, problem as you highlighted is price. Hendys have the factory on the doorstep so presume most people get a nice discount so can set the price at the upper end.

A good independent will be able to do a major service on your fiesta with a blindfold on as its straightforward stuff.

Sorry just read previous comment. Be aware that Ford garages tend to issue advisories for anything that may need doing prior to next service. This is to ensure they highlight everything but it doesnt mean it all needs to be done now.

Often these things will continue quite happily for a year (often longer) but they are making you aware of them.

Tyres for example will get an advisory when they hit 5mm. Doesnt mean they need changing. Worth bearing that in mind.
