Whats happened to Remegel?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but I suffer from heartburn a lot and having tried most of the indigestion relief products on the market over the years, the only one I get on with is Remegel.

I always used to buy it with my shopping in Asda/Tesco/Sainsbury's. Over the past few months all the supermarkets have stopped selling it. I then started buying in Lloyds chemist. They are now showing it as out of stock. So then I went to Boots but they too are now out of stock.

I am needing some soon so figured I'll just bulk order online, except all the main retailers are still listing it but showing it as out of stock??

Remegel is made by SSL International PLC but I can't find any info online to suggest they have stopped making it or have stopped trading.

Does anyone know what the heck has happened to this product as I really can't get on with the traditional 'chalky' remedies and I need my Remegel!!

Cheers

You may find johnson and johnson have something to do with them now

Rolaids Softchews were originally developed and test marketed, in Oklahoma City, under the brand name Remegel by Warner Lambert in 1984.

Rolaids is a brand of antacid produced by McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.

  • Have you tried avoiding the following: peppermint, tomatoes, chocolate, spicy foods, hot drinks, coffee, and alcoholic drinks. If you must have any of these take them infrequently and in moderation.

Also, avoiding large volume meals can help as well.

Some drugs can cause heartburn as well such as ibuprofen or aspirin. There are a few others as well.

Have you ever discused this with your GP?

There's more information on Patient.co.uk which will show you what you can do to help with symptoms.

Have you tried Gavescon? It works much better IMO and if you have heart burn from a medical problem (eg symptom of) your GP can prescribe you the chemists own version which is also not too bad and works better then remegel or rennies. I also found consuming more calcium helped- (milk rather then cheese) but just make sure you don't bolt it down, as this can be another cause of heart burn!

You can also get Gavescon in liquid form as well as tablets, you can also get up to 600ml bottles as well. Couldn't think of the name of this stuff last night as I was so tired. It cost between £7.50 and £8, though smaller bottles ccost less [of course].

If you have a any Savers stores near you try there as they were selling 600ml bottles some time ago for £4.99.

You could always try searching the MegaShopBot, and try searching mySupermarket and HotUKDeals deals from time to time as well.

If any websites you check look a bit dubious you could always come back here and enquire about it as well.

Thanks for all this! I have tried cutting out various things over the years and nothing really obvious from the list in your post seems to be the problem. I have learned that some things always seem to give it to me (like pasties and similar things) but the usual things that everyone suggests don't seem to do it. I have drank lots of coffee today to get me through a days work (well it is Monday!) and eaten plenty of chocolate.......and had no heartburn at all.

I did see the doc a few times a while back and they tested for ulcers and a dodgy valve, but all came back clear.

It doesn't bother me as its not like its constant, but when I do get it, its normally at night when in bed and so I really can't stand the nasty chalky remedies when I am half asleep and Remegel are the ones that work best for me!!

Anyway thanks for replying and for the advice

    Cheers

  • Are you eating in the last three hours before bedtime? Perhaps this is the reason why you're getting heartburn at night when in bed. Could also be something you've eaten during the day and then starts to disagree with you during the night.

I'm not a health expert, just wondering if that's what's coursing you to have heartburn at that period of the day.
  • Yeah maybe? Like I said I have tried many times to pinpoint it to a certain food type or something but I haven't really been able to pinpoint anything.

I can go out and have a good few lagers and a curry and have no problem at all. But then I can eat healthy all day and drink just water and get really nasty heartburn?!?!

Anyway as long as they sort the Remegel supply issue out soon I'll be ok ;)
  • I have also tried getting a supply of Remegel from Tesco, Sainsburies, the Co-op etc. I went into my village chemist who kindly rang one of the two main wholesalers for Remegel who said that "there is a problem in manufacture at the moment" so it looks like we'll have to find something else. I agree that Remegel is the only thing that works for me too
