Storage Insurance?

Can anyone recommend any companies that give insurance for our goods whilst they are in storage?

Do you already have home/contents insurance? if so, ring them up and ask them how much it'd cost to change the location/address on your policy. Never take out the rip off insurance offered by companies like Safestore/Big Yellow/etc.

I found that some storage people do have insurance and others dont.

There's a big difference between genuinely offering help/suggestions to people and doing so because you think you have spotted an opportunity for a gratuitous spot of self-promotion for your line of business. This especially applies when BY is AFIAA one of the storage companies who make using their in-house insurance a condition of using their storage facilities.

Look up at the top of the board: Don't post links for personal gain. Except in the referrers section and always declare any interest.

OP - try an insurance broker, or if you google self-storage insurance policy (or do a search of this forum) a particular firm's name will come up: they specialise in this type of insurance. Unfortunately, it looks like BY and at least one of the other biggies won't accept you using your own insurance.

  • It makes me really angry to see a company like Big Yellow advertising on this site I totally agree with tbs624.

I think the main underlying fact here is that Big Yellow charge in excess of £1.20 per £1000 of cover per week where as other insurance options available sell insurance for less than half that price.

The only 'Total Peace of mind' Big Yellow has is it is forcing its unsuspecting customer to take there over priced insurance therefore extracting maximum profit. Maybe they would like to justify there rates and explain why they are so ridiculously high.

This site is called Money Saving Expert not Spend your Money on Overpriced Products that are Designed to Rip You Off dot com.

scw1 do yourself a favour DO NOT USE BIG YELLOW.

Big Yellow do yourself a favour and remove yourself from this site because if you don't I am going to report you.
  • I am in shocked now they said that you can only insure your content with Big Yellow if you are storing stuff with them. according to insurastore.

I just called Big Yellow to confirm this as well.

IS THIS LEGAL??? I thought retailers cannot force you to insure with a tied provider that charges at least 3 times as much!!
  • should i be concerned that after 2 attempts to get a quote from insurastore they have still not got back to me ? not giving me the greatest confidence that i should part with £30 or so every month to them if they don't even respond to new business.

  • well, after 3 attempts to get a quote insurastore still hadn't gotten back to me, a great sign of hows things would be if i ended up needing to make a claim.

stay away from this company, it certainly won't be difficult too !
