I have just been on to their official web page hoping to see any news of a buyer, and they have a notice saying Comet Sale starting soon.

MSE Insert: We've now published this story about Comet's clearance sale. Now, back to the original post...

Does this mean they can not find a buyer?
I am one of those people who have never had a bad experience with Comet and would love to see 6500 jobs saved.

***Edited*** Sadly the liquidation sale starts Thursday so it looks like that's another high street name down the pan.

The Sun are reporting that the first stores could close within days so it doesn't look good.

My prediction, Currys/PC World will buy some of the stores in areas where they are currently not present, leaving the rest to close down and become just another empty unit on retail parks.

The Comet "brand" will just become a website (like Zavvi).

Currys/pcworld might buy the website - like sports direct have with JJB. Takes seconds to then link it to their own.

Take what the sun says with a massive pinch of salt - thats news at it worst. If they say a day, then it'l be a week.

Best looking at some respectful 'NEWS' papers if you want any accurate information on this.

The sale looks like starting later this week, or perhaps towards the end of next week - who knows, they may yet find a buyer. Either way its a real shame for anyone working there.

Why do these types of things happen before xmas? Surely they would be best waiting until after xmas and see what the festive trade brings?

Then, if still not good have a massive sale in January.

Either-way, if they do have a sale, its very doubtful you will see huge discounts on the most popular products, such as an Ipad, as they will sell all day long with even a 10% discount.

The biggest discounts will be on the slow moving stock, whatever that be in each store.

Good point. I remember the JJB website was the profitable part of the business (I know someone that did some work for them a while back) and no doubt its the same with the Comet website. That will have a good deal of value.

This is a bit of a press fail: http://press.comet.co.uk/index.php?cID=329&cType=news

Good idea, that way loads of people will spend money at Comet buying Xmas pressies then have a nightmare in the new year when they need to return gifts or try and get repairs sorted.

No, it's much better to get pre-Christmas warnings so that we can avoid spending our cash at a store that's likely to go tits skywards anyway.

  • Electrical specialist Comet predicts that its website will attract 5.2 million visits during the Christmas period between Christmas Eve and 3rd January 2012, as consumers rush to snap up some of the best deals the retailer has ever offered.

Press release from 2011 relating to Christmas last i fail to see the fail there:p

Yep, I don't normally read the sun but came across the article posted on another forum.

How much discount are Comet doing at the moment... ?

Some people were saying as little as 5% to 10% which is not that much of a discount when their prices are still high anyway.
