My company’s ATOL/ABTA numbers are L318X. MSE doesn't check my status as a Travel Agent, so you need to take my word for it. ATOL numbers can be checked with the Civil Aviation Authority. This signature is here as I follow MSE's Travel Agent Code of Conduct.

  • You can apply for Disability Living Allowance for children ... the care component from age 3 months and the mobility component (I think) from 5 years. You have to demonstrate that your child's needs are substantially greater than a child with normal needs of the same age.

Once DLA is awarded it may mean that you qualify for extra Income Support or Child Tax Credit (depending on your circumstances & the rate of DLA that's awarded). You may also qualify for Carer's Allowance for your child too once DLA (Care) at middle or higher rate is awarded.

You can claim DLA for your Child here ...

my son has ADHD with Autistic Tendencies and coz he can dress and feed himself DLA say he is not disabled enough, even though he will be on medication for the rest of his life and cannot be left alone, even his doctor is disgusted
If we can put a man on the moon...how come we cant put them all there?

  • my daughter has recentely been diagnosed with autism, and ive beeen told that some things on the form have to be worded in a certain way to receive the benifits,
its all new to me,but from the advise ive received, you can appeal and get an expert at dial or similar organisation to help you fill the form in.
there are a few web sites to give advise, this is one ive been given recently

  • Hello Travellady and webitha,

I'll write to both of you, as my advice is the same.

When you fill out the forms for DLA, it needs to be warts and all. It's sometimes not nice, having to put information about our children and their care / behaviour on a form in black and white, it's almost like admitting that we can't cope. But it is important that you think about everything, and put it down.
You may hear advice to imagine your worst day, and use that as a basis. This is wrong, give the total picture.

If you phone the DWP on 08457 123456 to request the forms. The claim will be dated from the date you request the forms.
In the meantime, collect medical reports, confirmation of diagnosis, a report from school, as these will all help towards your case.

Here is the link from a DWP decision maker. It contains advice, but is closed to new questions.

For help with filling in the forms, or for help with an appeal against being declined DLA, there are a number of organisations to help.

Welfare Rights is par of your county council.

Dial UK is a specialist disability information service, you can find your nearest branch from here:-
    http://www.dialuk.info

Also there is the CAB. You can make an appointment in advance to save on waiting time.

    It's worth seeking advice.

    Good luck,

My son has the same problems as yours (though he also has oppositional defiance disorder ODD, which is apparently common with ADHD and autistic spectrum kids). My son at present is only officially diagnosed as ADHD & ODD, while autistic tendencies is on all documentation he has not yet been put on the autistic spectrum.
He is now 5, and received highest care since the age of 4 and low mobility from the age of 5.
He could dress himself, but due to poor concentration if I ask him to he will forget and go and watch tv etc. He can also feed himself, but for the most part he is fed with me following him around the house just to make sure he eats. Was recently called to school as he had not eaten there for 2 weeks, not because he can't but because he becomes engrossed in his pals he forgets to eat!
He is on sleeping medication but I have not yet agreed to start the ADHD meds as I felt at 4 he was too young. He was on no medication when he was awarded DLA. The one thing I did request when I filled in the forms was that they wrote to his Paediatrician instead of his GP as his GP has only met him once because of a ear infection and I didn't feel he was the best person to ask.
I definitely think you should appeal or reapply.
  • mine very similar to happymum
son 6yrs adhd odd speech and lang probs and austistic. he gets high rate care and low mobility. he was awarded this in the summer a week b4 he was 6 and he has only been on meds a couple months. if the child is school age they contact the school before dr's/peads as they know their needs more.
they have a tendency to turn poeple done if there was not enough info put on forms so as other have said the more info the better
