ESA & JSA Joint claim?

Hi

I have recently become unemployed and have been told I will receive JSA (contribution based).

My partner will be moving in with me very soon as we are expecting a baby, however she is claiming ESA due to having cystic fibrosis.

I am very confused regarding the way a joint claim would work in this case, would her ESA have to stop and she become a joint JSA claimant with me or would I have to cease claiming JSA ??

Has anyone got any experience with a similar situation please ?

Thanks.

Apologies for any double threads !!

I'm sorry that no-one has replied to your thread.

I have been trying to answer myself and just can't find any information about this!

Not very helpful I know but thought I would reply as it 'bumps' up your thread.

It would seem logical that if you are fit for work and not applying for Carer's Allowance for your OH then I would have thought that you would stay on JSA and your OH would remain on ESA.

However, the benefit system appears to be far from logical!

If no-one else can help then I suggest you either contact a Benefits and Welfare specialist at CAB or ring the ESA helpline.
  • You can go on to her ESA claim, you can carry on looking for work if you want, but it does work out being more money if you have a joint esa claim.

I'm claiming contribution based ESA and my hubbie was made redundant last week and he was put on contribution based JSA, which the job centre said would make us slightly better (if you can call it that)
  • Thanks folks, it seems like I'm going to have to brave the local benefits office and try to get something on paper along with contacting the CAB etc.

    Thanks again :)

is she receiving contribution based or income based ESA?
  • Her ESA letter from jobcentreplus states Income related, will this make a difference?
  • Have you had any luck with your search? i am in basically the same situation and dont even know where to start with it all, im on esa and my partner is jsa, we have just signed a joint tenancy agreement so must apply for joint benefits. how do they combine 2 different benefits? does the amount or situation change for either of us? please help me!
