How long should you keep pay slips for?

I'm doing a big clear out in expectation of moving house soon and have come across wage slips from 2004 and 2004 for jobs we are no longer in. Do I still have to keep them or can I shred them?
Thanks

I think the tax office recommends 6 years

Six years - same as bank statements. I batch mine in groups of twelve so can throw out one year's supply every April

I keep 6 years + the current year's. I have my "cull" as one of my New Year jobs and have just shredded 2001.

  • I have all mine! ( except for casual jobs when a student ). Having just claimed my pension it was useful too check for the years when I worked part-time etc. Now it is all sorted out I guess I could get rid of them.

i keep mine for 3, because ive been in my job 3 and a half years, and for all that time i have been paid weekly. this will remain the case up until the end of march 08. thats a hell of a lot of payslips  especially considering me and OH both work for the same company

i keep my p60s, and i have my back statements going back to early 2000 and something.

sometimes, for all the good will in the world, it simply isnt possible to keep everything.

I would keep the P60s, but ditch the payslips after a couple of years.
At work we now get them scanned and emailed, so no paper to keep :D

(You can get hard copies if you need them for mortgage apps if required)
  • Hello to everyone who think you need to keep payslips for 6 years!

I am also having a clear out and just googled this - I hate keeping paperwork un-necessarily! Here is a quote from directgov's website:

HMRC suggests you keep your records for at least 22 months from the end of the tax year they relate to. The tax year runs from 6 April to the following 5 April, so keep paperwork until at least 31 January nearly two years later.

If you can work that out from your payslip, then hopefully like me, you can get shredding!!:T
