  • hold down the left alt key to the left of the space bar, type 251 on the numeric keypad, and let go of alt.

It's not really a tick, but it's the closest you'll get in ascii without having to use a font with an actual tick in it.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

It'll work in nearly every font on every system, as it's the square-root symbol :)

Use it all the time to check off spreadsheets, on the Mac it's much easier to enter it!

You can find "true" ticks but using a symbol font such as Windings on Windows.

It did not work using Open Office software, I have a laptop too with no number pad, so I guess the numbers across the top do not work with this shortcut??????

Entering alt codes has to be done by the numeric keypad not the normal numbers at the top of the keyboard. OpenOffice must have a symbol / character map insert tool like Word... have a look through the menus.

Else just add it to a doc on a desktop and copy it over.

Most laptops can spoof a numeric pad but holding down the Function Key (bottom right), turning letters into it, e.g. on my Dell U I O = 4 5 6 with the Fn key pressed...

thanks - same on my laptop too. Will try it
  • I've just tried to find it on my macbook in an ordinary text window like the one I'm typing in now.

I held down the left alt button and pressed "v".

    Here it is again.

You prompted me to go looking for it.

    Loving it.

    Thanks! √ :D

    Hi,

in Open Office, Writer and Calc, hit insert, special character, change right hand dropdown to mathematical operators, you will find it there.
