A stumper thread, I see, notice the OP did not say if the DVLA confirmation of updated records letter was issued after the penalty letter or before.

    maverick,
The SORN fines department give their phone number on the SORN fines letters that they send out top right hand corner. The SORN fines are dealt with by regional offices so the number I gave you London/Kent, or Cardiff, would be the wrong number for you. Don't you have a SORN fine letter to refer to? If not why do you need the number?

On the fine I had the office address was somewhere down in england and the only phone number provided was to pay the fine, and there was a note along the lines of they "couldn't discuss your case" on this phone number

Exactly my point, they use offices spread around the UK, mine for South Wales was a London /Kent office. It then got transferred to Cardiff when I argued my case with them. I subsequently had another that was being dealt with by Swansea. My point being that they use offices (apparently randomly) around the UK rather than one central office.
And the only phone number provided was to pay the fine, and there was a note along the lines of they "couldn't discuss your case" on this phone number
My 3 letters all had phone numbers, which said nothing about not discussing, when phoned the number in Kent I was given a menu of options, one of which was for SORN fines, and the next menu was for registrations beginning A -G press 1, H - J press 2, K - T press 3 etc.
  • Just to let you know that there are 3 main offices that deal with the Continuous Registration Fines the £40/£80 fines, known as CREC's (Continuous Registration Enforcement Centres). These are in Glasgow, Bournemouth and Northampton.

Some of these may get filtered to a local office, of which there are approx 40 throughout UK, if the CREC offices have too many to deal with.

There is no correlation to where you are in relation to which office your CREC fine may come from.

CREC fines cannot be contested over the phone, an appeal must be put in writing to office that issued the letter.

Not sure if that helps anyone but thought I'd mention it!

But you can (or at least I could) start the ball rolling by phoning up to have a quick chat with them. Then you return the form with a covering letter.

Theoretically I needen't have returned the form, because I knew I was correct I could have just ignored the letters, or phoned them up once to tell them so and refuse to return any forms, "see you in court". But I didn't wish to waste their time or mine.

I would tell them they did the SORN. They will tell you that you didnt. ask them to confirm in writing that they do not lose anything. they wont and you should get it waived. play on the lack of proof they didnt receive it.
  • :eek:I had an old ford escort that was sorn, then dvla came around just after I had arranged to get the car scrapped and clamped the vehicle, which I was not allowed to remove, they then sent me a letter after they took the car for money to recover the car or it will be scrapped, great I thought it will be scrapped. Now I have an amount of £375 to pay within two weeks how do I get this sorted as I don't have any idea on how to get out of this? :(

Was the Escort on the road (public)? If so you will have to pay up. How have they come to £375? Fine, plus removal fees plus storage etc etc

to be clamped it would need to be on the road.
    meaning a SORn was applicable
    was it?
if they clamped on private land then you can contest it

Can you scan the 1st letter for us to read? Or type it out in full.

As already asked, are you sure it was on public road?
