Old Style Daily Wednesday 27 March 2024
Good morning folks. Yes, it's unfeasibly early for me to be actually dressed, I'm about to head down the road to Glasgow for an optician's appointment this morning. It's a combined eye test and contact lense check so takes a bit longer. No doubt I'll need new something or other. I hope that everyone is doing well.

Can we start using the oven for Sunday baking again?
Hi, as its been so long since I used my gas oven because it's been so expensive and I've got no idea how much it costs - so I've decided that when the gas (and electricity) prices go down in April I'm going to start using my oven again on a Sunday. I'll fill it up as I always used to, with a small joint of meat and…

Window cleaners - just why?
Having not had one in the last few decades, I’m still genuinely puzzled as to why people spend a fortune on regular window cleaning. I can assure you that our windows are every bit as clean as those of our neighbours, because the rain does all the work for free. Pay a window cleaner, and you’ll have sparkling clean windows…

Help - cooking supermarket pork chops.
Hi all, Is it actually possible to cook a supermarket pork chop without overcooking them? They are so thin that every technique I've tried doesn't appear to help. I've grilled, brined, cooked on high heat/low heat and all combinations of the above. All produce either an undercooked or "used insole" chop. Obviously I could…

Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole…

Quick soup question
Planning to use overripe tomatoes to make some tomato soup and I normally put a bit of celery in but I haven’t got any. Any suggestions for an alternative to give it that extra something?

Cooking wine or sherry recommendations requested
I want to experiment with added wine or sherry to some cooking. I don't drink so I don't have any bottles I could try. I understand that the cooking version of red wine and sherry contain preservatives so opened bottles keep longer. I wouldn't know the difference between different ones and don't know what would be a cheap…
