Hello. We have recently retired and for the first time have money to invest. As our bank account is joint, will our tax free allowances be applied jointly to the interest we earn? My husband has just the £1000 as he has extra income and I have £2500 as I am on a low income. Also my building society says the interest earned…

Transfer from management of investments in active Wealth Manager to Vanguard passive funds
Hi all, Quick question for anyone who has transferred their general investments and ISAs from an active manager to simple passive Vanguard funds. How much of a headache is it? For historic and convenience reasons I have built up a decent pot of investments with a wealth manager over the years with the portfolio designed…

Paying into savings for the kids / using adult savings
My kids receive regular contributions to savings accounts but currently receiving pitiful interest. I want to switch their accounts but don't want the grandparents to have to update their contribution every time I switch. Especially as many of the better rates are often limited to a year (so likely to switch annually at…

Stocks and Shares ISA confusion
I opened one of those Stocks and Shares ISA where the provider picks the shares/portfolios and you just select a level of risk. I now want to open a DIY Stocks and Shares ISA where I put some shares in there that I pick. I thought I could do this in the same tax year, thinking they are different versions of ISA, but are…

Smartsave
Just opened a Smartsave fixed rate 1 year bond. Before making a transfer I decided to carry out out a review. I should have done this first, having checked on Trustpilot it seems they are a bit hit and miss. Has anyone on the site have any experience dealing with them?

Tax on savings interest for PhD student
Hi - I’ve just started a full-time PhD and hence my income is in the form of a stipend, which is not subject to income tax. Since I’m not using up any of my personal tax allowance, do I qualify for the “Starting rate for savings” and can I therefore earn up to £5,000 in savings interest before paying tax? Or would my…

I am not finding it easy to see the costs on HL. They talk about funds, but funds is a pretty vague term.. Is there any reason regarding costs not to hold HMWO in a LISA ? HL don't list any ETFs on the favourite funds held in Lisa's, the nearest fund to hmwo being Fidelity World Index with higher charges... Thanks for any…

£120K in an unwrapped account - suggestions?
Apologies I know it's a first world problem. I have approx £200K in an ISA in a cheap passive global tracker. I have approx £120K in an unwrapped account that I'm trying to decide what to do with. Essentially it's cash that I don't plan on accessing but I want the optionality of accessing it. I'm prepared to take some…

Income tax on UK government gilt
Hi all, Could I please ask if my understanding is correct that if I purchase UK government gilt outside of any tax shelter, as long as the interest generated from my overall saving/investment is less than £10,000, I don't have to do the self assessment tax return? The HMRC will auto deduct the tax from my next year's tax…

More than £85k with SJP single pension account?
If you can put aside your dislike of SJP for this question, would anyone have a problem putting £100k or £200k with SJP in a single pension fund? Question is in the context of risk of my money should SJP have issues with financial stablity, not a concern about the success or otherwise of their products. Thanks

Savings interest pushing into higher rate tax
Hi there, hoping someone can advise. I currently have savings in any easy access, with interest paid monthly, where the interest will be over the £1000 allowance, and where it is likely it is going to push me into a higher rate tax bracket as well. If I were to move my savings from current easy access, to a 90 day notice…

Is Zopa bad now?
Signed up for Zopa last summer when their interest rates were decent. Seems they are now below many others in terms of savings even using their limited access pots. Is it just a simple case of me opening an account with say Tandum and transferring all my savings from Zopa to them or am I missing something? I assume the…

Vanguard Life Strategy performance
I have held Vanguard LS 60% and 80% equity acc ISAs for over two years. They are still down around 1.2% and have never performed well. Can't seem to find any recent information on them. They were always considered one of the safer options. Any advice on whether I should just cut my losses and move elsewhere.

Buying Bonds
As I understand it the capital gain on bonds is not taxable? So with low coupon bonds selling cheap thats very attractive to a taxpayer For instance https://www.bloomberg.com/markets/rates-bonds/government-bonds/uk 2 year UK Govt Bonds coupon 0.63% yield 5.35% so (5.35 - 0.63) = 4.72% is tax free So is it time to take our…
