Slow cooker or oven?
Been reading advice to ise the slow cooker to save on energy. However just read an article in The Sun newspaper app which said to use an electric oven (mine is gas, doesn't give figures for gas) is £66 per year daily for 30 minutes use. Yet it says a slow cooker on for 8 hours, which I thought was energy saving is £13.80…

Employing a cleaner direct
I’ve used a cleaning company in the past and they’d had training and not only cleaned but made the place look as though it had been cleaned. After a long time they became less effective (I felt the cleaning was rushed and I was taken for granted, it seems to happen if you stay long term with service providers) A couple of…

Parsley Box meals
Does anyone use these? Are they any good? I’m looking for a quick meal option for times like today, when I’ve got home from a lovely meeting with friends but exhausted, needing to eat but too done in to start cooking. I have various ready meals in the freezer, but veg prep is too much. It took three glasses of wine to be…

Instant Pot/Multicooker recipes please?
Hello all! Been a very long time since I posted on here but I have been lurking! I'm getting an InstantPot tomorrow and just wondered if anybody had any good recipes for me to try? I already have a small slow cooker which I use quite a lot but in an attempt to use my oven a lot less I've splashed out on the…

Where to go from here? - Frugality and Budgeting Diary
Morning all, I am just trying to work out where things can be cut. We don't drive (so no car or fuel to account for) we don't watch TV, streaming is either YouTube or paid for by one of my parents and we're already pretty energy efficient (use of combi microwave rather than using oven, using pressure/slow cooker, etc.),…

Weekly Flylady Thread 14th November 2022
Welcome to the weekly Flylady
Thread. What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea -
but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be
time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on
Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole…

New job and I need ideas for not buying food on the go
Morning all I've been working from home / very part time for the last year. I've lost nearly 3 stone by eating healthily and cooking from scratch, as well as saving the pennies from not buying ready made food. Just two of us as kids have flown. I've now got a new job 4 days a week and through previous habits I know my fab…

Examples of surprising prices
Did shop today and Prawns were cheaper than Margarine. I was surprised by this as see prawns as luxury and Margarine as a basic and not suggesting you use prawns instead of Margarine. It seems to me the basics are getting very expensive and we should switch our diets possibly. Some more examples would be most helpful

which brand of washer dryer would it be wisest to opt for?
I live in a flat so I must get a single unit for both washing and drying. it seems they are likely to be less reliable, but that's the consequences of being poor, everything costs more. :/ well I am trying to decide brand. the cheapest ones sell the most and so the parts must be easy to get and repairs therefore cheaper.…

Morning folks. It's a chilly start here with no hope of any more warmth. Some may remember that ages ago I was disappointed to find that the mugs I wanted to buy from M&S had been discontinued, well yesterday they were back on their website at a reduced price so I've ordered four. 😀 When I emptied the dishwasher yesterday…

Old Style Daily Thursday 17 November 2022
Morning folks. The stars are twinkling in the sky this morning, one of my favourite sights of the day. Yesterday I spent some time rearranging my thoughts, pushing some right away and bringing others right to the front of my mind. It's so blooming annoying that one negative memory always pushes in to eat away the many good…
