Hi folks

I was just hoping to tap your expertise please ... What do you rate as the best site or app that lets you enter your ingredients to find a recipe to cook for dinner?

I know the old Cookingbynumbers has shut down. BigOven (http://www.bigoven.com/recipes/leftover) and Supercook (http://www.supercook.com/) seem like good alternatives. How do these work for you and have you heard of any others?

Thank you!

Hi

I am looking for suggestions for meals I can do cheaply to feed two adults and two toddlers. I have a very fussy OH and two year old and I am intolerant to tomatoes. OH won't eat pasta or mushrooms, hates spicy food of any kind and my two year old hates anything new. I would like her to try more meat, she eats all fruit and vegetables but will reject meat if its not sausages or chicken nuggets. :o

I do cook things like toad in the hole, pizza and chicken stews but I would like to cook something different.

I would appreciate any ideas

Thanks

Hi, this is the Daily Thread for 16th May. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in,put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.

When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.

Morning all,

WE actually have sunshine :j shame I am off to work, still it looks nice through the window :D

Will do a wash tonight, and get it on the airer, OH bought a de-humidifier at the garage sale as is desperate to try it out, (its meant to help your washing dry out too) so might try it tonight.

Dinner will be carbonara, with salad, which is nice and easy. Will have a quick tidy through before i go to work, and I need to post the last remaining ebay parcel.

Ok better get on, have good days all xx

My boyfriend is currently in Afghanistan and so far has lost a stone in a week and a half due to not getting enough food, and doing so much exercise/work

Can anyone think of anything I can buy (must be shop bought and packaged) that I can send to him which he can snack on?

I'm not really sure what to send and what would be the best kind of thing for a situation like this, also, it needs to be something with a long expiry date and something that won't melt

Sorry if this sounds like a silly question but I'm struggling to think of things which may be suitable

We have totally run out of money and don't get paid until 25th May - well i have £2 but i need to use that on bread and milk.
We ( 2 adults and im pregnant) need to eat off what we have in the house.
I know there is plenty there to eat, we had been living off frozen junk but ive been cooking from scratch for about 8 months now so im glad that junk has to get eaten up instead of thrown away so it will be gone and wont be buying that stuff anymore. But I am used to using recipes because im no natural cook. I cant just throw things together so i need help in coming up with some meals please.

I am possibly being given 1kg potatoes on Saturday.

Breakfasts are fine, we have in cornflakes, weetabix & porridge.

But hubby takes a lunch to work (usually 2 sandwiches, 2 pieces of fruit and 2 biscuits) i am home so i just have whatever.

so lunch and dinners for 10 days!!

Do you have any suggestions for me please as i really truly need the help.

Id be ever so grateful.

I'm beginning to panic a little bit.

Thank you in advance.

Afternoon :)

I'm planning to batch cook tomorrow and so I've had a clear out of my freezer and found a stray 2kg bag of Tesco chicken fillets. According to the bag they are leg, thigh and drumsticks - http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=259192841

I've no idea how they got there or how long they've been there :rotfl: but they are in date and so I've taken them out to defrost rather than the chicken I was going to do and use the meat from those to do things to get them out the way.

One thing I've never made is soup, I understand that it can be made by boiling the carcass of the bird? I have some soup mix thing from Approved Food (Sainsburys Country Mix) so I'm assuming that can be used too but what about the bones from this? Can I make a soup from the leg bones or is it best to wait until I do a full chicken?

If it is possible, how do I go about it? (Have a food processor and veg to add too :))

Hi, I am getting on very well with the decluttering, am almost there in fact. I am off work this week and want to order a filing cabinet to be delivered while I am off. I don't know whether to go for the two drawer or three drawer one. My idea is to store bills etc in one drawer, my laptop, Kindle and DS Lite in another drawer and old journals in the other one.

My journals are currently kept in a locked tin which is now full. I have debated scanning them all and throwing out the originals but this would take a lot of time and patience. A friend suggested that if I get a filing cabinet I can store them in there with room for more in the future. I am torn between journalling on paper as I always have done or on the laptop.

I have digitalised by CDs, thrown away books that I have on the Kindle so have created space for other things.

Hi,
I was fortunate enough to come into possession of a couple of cans of tinned cheese :)
Now I'm assuming I can pretty much use this cheese in much the same way as regular cheese & praying it doesn't taste awful.

Suggestions that spring to mind are to melt in on toast, homemade pizza etc
Melt for a cheese sauce e.g mac n cheese etc

Any other suggestions out there? Has anyone ever actually used tinned cheese before & lived to tell the tale?

My slow cooker has packed up so looking at getting a new one. Is there any brands, types that are better than the others?

I have had a quick look on the web and notice there are ones with several different heat settings, some digital displays etc.

I think I will get a large one so I can cook joints etc but any advise would be welcome.

Thanks

Hi, this is the Daily Thread for 15th May.

Morning everyone and hus to all in need especially *jools*

Okay, I live miles from a big town but have a Nepalese hubby & my own preference for spicy food on a very low income!

So.... we buy online - I save up & get a Tescos delivery (most Tescos sell 2kg bags of Dal & Value Basmati rice can be as low as £1/kg)

If anyone is going to a big town or London I'll try to hitch a lift (offering petrol money naturally) or I save up & order from one of the Asian grocery online firms like iTadka.

* Sometimes places like Approved Food have Dal in stock & we bulk buy this or basmati rice
* Health food shops (the independent ones) will often sell spices etc at lower prices loose per ounce.
* Dal(s) - 'dal' is simply a generic term for a lentil, dried pea or bean. Chana Dal has a terrifically low GI - great for diabetics.
* Basmati rice - old or OOD is better as it gets better with age, and a much lower GI than normal long grain rice.

So.... we buy online - I save up & get a Tescos delivery (most Tescos sell 2kg bags of Dal & Value Basmati rice can be as low as £1/kg)

If anyone is going to a big town or London I'll try to hitch a lift (offering petrol money naturally) or I save up & order from one of the Asian grocery online firms like iTadka.

Sometimes places like Approved Food have Dal in stock & we bulk buy this or basmati rice

Health food shops (the independent ones) will often sell spices etc at lower prices loose per ounce.

Dal(s) - 'dal' is simply a generic term for a lentil, dried pea or bean. Chana Dal has a terrifically low GI - great for diabetics.

Basmati rice - old or OOD is better as it gets better with age, and a much lower GI than normal long grain rice.

Essential spices to start off with: Turmeric "Haldi" , Cumin Seeds "jeera" , Red Chilli ground or flakes "Lal mirch"

Garam masala isn't necessary for making proper Indian light dal from split lentils, it's better for meat or heavier dishes.

Buy whole seeds of any spices you may need, and grind up to make a powdered version. I make my own garam masala like this.

If you are near any markets, ethnic shops or large supermarkets it's worth visiting after 3 pm - marked down stock etc. Garlic, ginger and green finger chillies will cost much much less at an ethnic greengrocer usually.

Here is a good simple authentic recipe for "Dal"

Jools’s recipe for Tarka Dal - serves 4 - less than £1.00 per portion including rice & raita

For the Dal

1 x 500g pack split red lentils (‘Masoor dal’) or Chana dal,or Moong dal

2 tsp turmeric (‘haldi’)

½ tsp ground/flaked red chilli

Salt to taste

3 tb sp crushed garlic, or garlic paste

3 tb sp grated ginger, or ginger paste

1 small onion, finely chopped

One thick slice of lemon, de-seeded.

A handful of chopped coriander stalks (save the leaves for later)

For the Tarka

1 tbsp ghee or mustard oil, or a light vegetable oil.

½ tsp ground asafoetida (‘Hing’)

1 or more green chillies, sliced into fine rings

3 cloves garlic, finely sliced & chopped lengthways

2 tsp cumin seeds (‘Jeera’)

Check the lentils for stones and wash them in several changes of water

Put the lentils into a large saucepan or stockpot and cover with plenty of water, at least double the dal if not triple. Leave to soak for a couple of hours.

Add all the other dal ingredients, stir, cover and bring to the boil.

Turn the heat down and simmer, covered . Make sure lentils do not burn and add extra water if necessary.!

Cook for around 40 minutes (red masoor lentils) or up to 1 ½ hours for the other types of yellow dal! A big pressure cooker is useful.

At the end of the you should have a deep yellow soup-like mixture.
Remove the lemon slice.
Chop a good handful of the coriander leaves and add to the cooked dal.

Adding the tarka:

Heat the ghee or oil in a small omelette pan or similar.
Add the asafoetida, then the cumin seeds, chilli, garlic. Fry, stirring constantly for until the spices splutter and everything turns a deep golden brown -but make sure they do not burn.
Immediately tip all the tarka into the dal, it will sizzle a little. Use a little of the dal to swirl around the tarka pan to make sure all the tarka flavours go into the dal.
Stir everything well and check the level of salt
Serve with rice, raita, roti

Raita

Onion

Cucumber

Tomato

A few sprigs of coriander (‘Dhania’)

Chopped mint or mint sauce

Low fat plain yogurt

Raita/chutney masala

½ tsp cumin seeds

Finely chop your onion, cucumber, tomato & coriander.

Add to yogurt, add chopped mint or mint sauce (2 tsp per 500g yogurt)

Add raita/chutney masala, if wanted.

In a dry pan, toast the cumin seeds then scatter these over your raita and eat!

Also wanted to add - my hubby works in the Indian restaurant business & obviously we have lots of south Asian connections - so any help I can give with how to cook 'real' Indian type food I'll be happy to do so!

Evening meals are a problem for me as I have a DH who loves meat every evening, a DD who will eat most things and another DD who is a vegetarian! I like most veg, fruit, yogurts etc but have no real idea what to cook that everyone will eat.

Any ideas gratefully received :o

I know last week I had been given 2 cans of Monster, 2 Rimmel nail varnishes and a bottle of perfume.

So what have you had given to you? I think i'll pop on each time I get given something, hope you will too :)

Thing is having a new kitchen and an intergrated dishwasher fitted soon, don't want to wreck the new one! Also want to get rid of rust spots, heated rubbing with Cif or the like should do it, but haven't got any, would bicarbonate and lemon work?

Plus salt is over £1 a bag and seem to go through alot.

Thanks
