Travel in France - advice needed, please!

I have a holiday planned for the beginning of June (Sun 9th - Sat 15th), where I will be staying in a house in Maubourguet in the South of France with my girlfriend and a number of her family, who live in various places around the world.

I have booked flights for 4 of us based in Scotland - me, my girlfriend, her cousin and her granny. Her granny may not be able to travel due to ill health, in fact, this is fairly likely at the moment. We will be flying from Edinburgh.

As a complete novice at travelling outside of the UK, I have made the rookie mistake of booking the cheapest flights I can possibly get hold of, regardless of destination airport, without considering travelling arrangements between the airport and our accommodation. As such, I have booked flights to Toulouse, which is near to Maubourguet, but not so near that I can rely on family driving 2 hours to pick us up.

So, I am hoping that someone who has more experience than me, can recommend an affordable way of getting from Toulouse to somewhere nearby - perhaps Pau or Lourdes, both of which have train stations and airports.

As far as I can tell, my options are to either buy a one-way train ticket, which would be about £35 each, or else I could hire a car for one day, with the aim of driving from Toulouse to a branch in the area. This would be about £65 and presumably the cost of petrol on top.

Hey,

I posted earlier regarding my stress over repaying debts. In a nutshell we are paying off a fair chunk of debt over 24 months but I am constantly worrying about it.

I have got into the habit of constantly checking my credit report on experian. This is driving me mad as it not always updated and accurate.

I am seriously thinking of cancelling my experian account and just focussing on paying my debts back without the constant checking.

What do you guys think??

Warning - LV Car Insurance renewal price - I saved 45% just be checking online!

I received my motor insurance renewal quote from LV yesterday and was horrified to see that it had crept up to a whopping £531 (from £460 last year) so I thought it might be time to have a quick check online to see whether I was being ripped off.

Being a bit untrusting of insurance companies I entered fake details (same street, different number, same age, occupation, claims history, etc) and the online quote for LV was a shockingly low £360.

I called LV to check how this could be and the rather unhelpful lady took exception to my method of entering "fraudulent" details to get a quote and assured me that their system doesn't detect that you are an existing customer and generate an inflated quote. I asked her what the best price she could offer was and the answer was a rather disappointing £490. I thanked her and let her know I'd think about it (and have a look at some alternative quotes).

So, with nothing to lose I went back online and again tried the LV site, this time entering my true details. To my horror the quote was even lower at £353.

So, I called them back and this time the very helpful (different) lady explained that I had had the policy for quite a long time and that they now use a slightly different policy with "different underwriting criteria", whatever that means.

She went through my details again and came up with the unbelievably lower quote of £289! This was a little cheaper than normal because I also have another "financial" product with LV.

Long story short - I reduced my renewal from £531 to £289 with the same insurer!

I'm looking forward to checking my other LV car insurance at renewal time. I hate to think how much I have been overpaying for the last few years!

Working Late

Not really asking for advice or anything, am just wondering if working late was now a major part of most peoples jobs because of the recession.

I was made redundant in April last year from a public sector job in London and two weeks ago finally managed to get a job for a media company on a temp-to-perm basis after 13 months of soul destroying unemployment.

The companies official hours are 9 til 5.30 and I am on timesheets whilst doing the 3 month temp-to-perm thing.

However one thing I have noticed is that everybody seems to work late, not just 10-15 minutes but at least an hour. There is no real movement from anyone until at least 6.30 and most people work until 7 or 8.

Pretty much everywhere I have worked in the past has always been a 9 til 5 and everyone leaves at 5. I am not really the type of person who wants or likes to work late, life is too short to be sat at a desk for 10 hours everyday, by the time it gets to 4-5 in the afternoon I am usually also winding down and am pretty much done for the day. But at the same time 13 months of unemployment was horrendous.

For the first couple of days at my new job I left at 5.30 as I hadn't been fully trained and usually ran out of work by this point and my boss would tell me we were done. However now I am working til nearly 6 because I am fearful of not being taken on permanently as I feel it is frowned upon not working after hours. Even leaving at 6 I feel uncomfortable as I'm the first to leave and some of my colleagues have jokingly said 'part-timer' as I put my coat on. I also only put 9 til 5.30 on my timesheet despite working half hour later everyday as my contract only says 37.5 hours per week.

I don't know what to do. Any advice would b appreciated. I know no one has a crystal ball.

Our house purchase is going sooooo slowly. :(

We had an email from our solicitor today saying that the vendors are offering to sell us their oven, fridge/freezer and washing machine for £100 each.

The items concerned are not top of the range to begin with and from what we can see you could easily buy better ones new for only very slightly more, so we're not overly interested.

We would like to renovate the kitchen at some point but not right way, so it would be handy to have the oven there and working and not have to go to the hassle of buying a new one and getting a gas fitter to fit it.

As far as the fridge/freezer goes, if they left it for free then fine but otherwise it doesn't look like something we'd want to buy from them.

My partner has totally vetoed keeping their washing machine and wants a new one. :)

So, I'm thinking of responding that we'll offer them £50 for the oven if they can confirm it is in safe and working order, but we don't want the other two items and expect to see them removed prior to exchange. Does that sound reasonable?

We believe that the vendors have already moved out into rented accommodation and so I think they will consider having to dispose of their kitchen appliances to be a major hassle. I expect they will come back and say they just intend to leave the appliances there for free.

Would it be petty to hold up exchange over the removal of a washing machine? How much does it cost to have the people who deliver a new washing machine disconnect the old one and take it away? If we're talking £50 then maybe we could just ask them to leave all the appliances for free, if it comes down to this.

The other thing is, when I was last there I noticed that the loft was full of their junk. I am concerned that they are just going to leave it all behind. Is it worth me asking the solicitor to get them to confirm they will clear out the loft?

Having never done this before I've no idea what level of clearing out of vendor's junk is normal when you buy a house..

I am not a great cook and am quite late getting home in the evenings so whatever we do eat needs to be made fairly swiftly, within about half an hour if possible. Some days I get a short amount of time free in the morning before I go to work to prep vegetables but not every day. We are on a very tight budget, I am a vegetarian and my husband is not. What I need is a menu for the week that can adapt each day for us both, possibly with me being able to utilise some ingredients over from one day to the next to save time and money. Is there anyone that can help please? I seem to struggle every day with our food especially as one of us is vegetarian. Thanks.

I plan on going this year, but I have never been before.

I have been to the Australian open which was a great experience. Is there any chance of getting centre court tickets or court 1?

Just general advice is appreciated, as I haven't got a clue.

Is there any parking etc?

Thanks in advance

I don't know if any of you have seen this video about a young man called Zach Sobiech yet, (I couldn't find any threads when I searched), but this is viral/starting to go viral.

It's quite a long video, but well worth watching in my opinion. It's very sad and a lot can be learned from Zach.
