I'm looking to buy a new car, I need a cheap one as I only want to spend approx £3000, but obvouosly want the best and most practical one I can get for that.

My other half and I both travel approx 50 miles a day to and from work so I need a car that is going to be really economical and the highest mpg possible. With oetrol prices the way they are at the moment I need something cheap to run. I'm also thinking about running costs...tax! I've heard some cars you only pay £35 a year! That sounds good to me!

Any advice??? ideas or recommendations on what to get would be very much appreciated!

Get a diesel. Don't worry about the tax if its under £200.

citroen C3 1.4 hdi falls into the £35 a year tax bracket and is very economical on fuel.
these are also roughly in your price range,i know someone who had one and found it very reliable and good to drive, economical yet powerful.

( i cant believe ive just advised someone to buy a french car!)

I bought my 03 citroen C3 1.4 hdi 10 months ago on ebay for £2,950. It has been completely reliable, nippy and I would say I average 65mpg - fuel consumption is actually improving with age! Sailed through it's mot with no faults and it is £35 road tax.
