I would like to re-use my rimless frames and get new lenses fitted. Has anyone already done their homework and found a list of re-glazing companies please?

The main site thread doesn't mention this option. You can clearly get cheap complete glasses, but it if you want to keep your £200 frames it may be cheaper to reglaze.

There are a couple of suggested companies in the big discussion forum thread 'Glasses buying cost cutting discussion area', but it's mainly about buying glasses with new cheapo frames included. I can't find a thread on reglazing companies though. Anyone help please?

Most suppliers recommend polycarbonate lenses as the best for rimless but the company mentioned in the glasses thread (cilaryblue) dont offer them. When i rang them they didnt recommend them for rimless because they distort at the holes. I'm confused! Anyone shed any light?

Thanks.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=1009335#post1009335)) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com (abuse@moneysavingexpert.com).

Thank you for moving to the correct board. To help myself and others understand could you please explain why a thread entitled 'Glasses Buying Cost Cutting Plan Article Discussion Area' belongs on the 'Shop but dont drop' board but a 'Reglazing glasses cost cutting discussion area' requires moving to the 'I wanna' board? If i added the words 'buying' and 'article' could it stay?

I must admit that i thought the 'Glasses Buying Cost Cutting Plan Article Discussion Area' thread, placed by MSE Archna, was in strange forum because i found it via a link on the main board (family/health), but the thread was placed to the 'shop but dont drop' forum even though there is health forum it could have gone in! I would have placed my thread in the health forum if i hadn't followed the lead of MSE Archna.

I think that you must have lost the plot. I got 1 reply in 2hrs where the thread was originally placed and since you moved it there has been no responses in 3 days!
I have asked you nicely to explain your action but you have not replied. This is an abuse of your position and i will be reporting you as you have suggested above.

Hi Andrew, just some clarification for you on this.

Firstly, if my memory serves me right the health sub-board didn't exist when the Glasses thread from the main site article was started so it was in the best place at the time, although I may well be wrong. You're right though, the Health board would be the best place for it now.

In the case of your thread it's rather subjective. As the official standard reply saintscouple posted suggests we ask board guides to move threads if they think they're not getting many replies where they are and could get more on another board. As you were asking a question I'd say either of the I Wanna or Health boards would be logical. Unfortunately as you say, you've not had so many replies. These things happen, it's not something anyone can predict.

I'll move the thread to the Health board for you and see if that helps get you some more answers.

Meanwhile, please remember this is a friendly community. By all means if you disagree with someone's actions let them or abuse@ know but there's no need for it to become heated.

Andrea :)

I did wonder if I would get banned for being contraversial and telling the truth. Thankyou for your help, understanding and not just agreeing with saintscouple.

For your information you do not need to rely on your memory. The glasses thread was started in Oct 05 and the health & beauty forum has threads dating back to Feb 05. Strange how no one has moved the incorrectly placed glasses thread in 3 years!

It would be good is if the MSEers that write the main site threads include info on reglazing within the glasses cost cutting thread, as this is a major cost saving alternative that has missed.
Thanks for your help.

Hi t.m.d
They do do sunglass lenses, we use them for galzing and sometimes supply of lenses too, at my Opticians. I think you may be able to do it online, though I'm not sure, you'll have to check, but the quality is a good as any we use in my practice. I hope this helps?

Hi

I used spex4less to reglaze my glasses, optical express wanted £80 to reglaze them and D&A wanted £90 - so off i went to look on the net and I sent them to spex4less and got them back in 3 days for £15! I was really chuffed! Great service i would recommend them.

Hope that helps!

I really don't understand why spectacles are so expensive in this country. Last year I went to Specsavers and was quoted about £150+ for a pair of glasses with the ultrathin lenses. Admittedly i had a pair of frames which actually looked nice on me rather than cheapo cheapo frames.

I went to Hong Kong earlier this year on business. A local company picked me up in a car, drove me to their shop. Free eye test, I picked a pair of rimless glasses with ultra thin lenses, free drinks and made within 30 mins. After they dropped me back off at my hotel. Cost? £45

Two days later thought to myself I'll go get a pair of glasses with photochromatic lenses. Same process. This time took them slightly longer to make. Couldn't get the ultra-thin lenses but I think thats the same everywhere. Cost..... £40

Glasses4Eyes do rimless frame re-glazing (http://www.glasses4eyes.co.uk/re-glazing.php). They recommend rimless glasses should be fitted with polycarbonate lenses and you are given the option to upgrade to polycarbonate lenses on their online order form.

lookonlineforspecs.co.uk (http://www.lookonlineforspecs.co.uk) offer reglazing too.

£15 including lenses, unless you go for upgrades.

I'm livid :mad: I've just come across 'reglazing' as an option from another finance website. I'm severely short-sighted and my prescription changed frequently until my 40s when it seems to be improving slightly . However, every time there was a change the optician was insistent that I needed new glasses and that my current frames couldn't be used. Given they would cost upwards of £300 (frames and lenses) and I wear contacts 95% of the time, I always resisted until I had the money/found somewhere cheaper.

Not once had any optician at Optical Express and, more recently, D&A suggested I could get my lenses reglazed so I wouldn't have to get new frames. That would have saved me £00s over the years. I'm due a sight test in about 2 weeks. If my prescription has changed again, I'll give them what for if reglazing is not mentioned :mad::mad:

Bunch of thieving ............... :mad::mad::mad:

Hi, I have been in Optics over 25 years and reglazing is frowned upon because the frame sale is so important. It is often used as a last resort to 'keep' the patient. Very wrong though! Some on-line sites offer it, but make sure they know what they are doing! We use a company to make the specs for our practice, when my lab tech is away, that do on-line reglazing only. For us the work is perfect and as good as our techi would do. Worth a look, not promoting on-line businesses too much as they do make our work slightly more difficult, but if you want to do it this way then try ciliaryblue.

DH has had only two frames in the last 6 and a half years, just keps getting them reglazed. He has this done through a normal high street chain opticians, and they are always happy to do this. When he did replace the frames he's chosen more expensive frames that he fels suit him, feeling he can send a little more as he's going to reuse them. :)

Thanks you guys. I had to move my sight test to August so I'll wait to see what the results are, what they suggest, then politely raise the reglazing issue.

Did you go for Ciliary Blue reglazing in the end, Andrew? They look almost ideal for me but I hadn't noticed that they don't do polycarbonate for rimless (I was fooled by the "ultra thin"), which is what I have and would like replaced. The only thing with polycarbonate is that it does fingerprint badly, but I dread anything heavier and am prepared to put up with frequent cleaning.

I'm extremely broke but my eyes have deteriorated significantly, I feel, in the past year or so.

Hi veronarona,
We can reglaze any pair of glasses with polycarbs, they are strong and extremely light, but we have found after doing many thousands of rimless, that they become very brittle when drilled and tend to crack and 'star' around the drill holes. We tend now to use standard lenses as they have a higher success rate. If you wanted polycarbs they would cost the same as our 1.60 index lenses and it would mean giving us a call to order rather than on-line.

which type of lense are the lightest/ thinnest?

Also do anyone know where to get nose pad replacements from since the ones on my rimless glasses are going yellowish !

I'm 99.9% sure that polycarbonate are the lightest/thinnest lenses. I'm very impressed with the non-scratch properties of mine, too.

I don't know about nose pads - but they can't be difficult to replace because I'm sure I've seen offers for specs with spares included.

As a result of these forums me and my family have had their glasses made very cheaply, we have used ciliaryblue exclusively so much so that they have given me a loyalty promotion code that reduces the value of the pruchase by 10%, my friend used this same code today for her first purchase and got the same discount. Try and save a little more, the code is exp001. I hope it works for you guys too.
