View Full Version : How Much Do You Pay For A Haircut?

A bit of a strange topic I know but it's got me curious.

I've just come back from having mine done at a local shop and it cost £6.80 for just a cut (If I colour it I do it myself at home). I've been using them for a few years and I've always been very happy with how they did it and didn't want to spend more.

Then I got talking to a friend in Leeds who spends £100+ each time she has hers done, obviously there's a large difference because I live in a town and she lives in a city but it still strikes me as an extravagant amount of money especially when it needs doing so regularly.

I'm a bloke and my local barbers charges me £12.50 (outer london)

I can get it done at another place for £7, but i don't think they're as good.

I used to spend £10 having it done by a girl that came to the house. I washed it, and then she would cut it and blow dry it.

Then i used to spend £130 a time having it cut and highlighted (3 colours with foils) and blow dried/straightened

Now I spend £55 every 6-8 weeks with a salon hairdresser - I adore the way she cuts my hair. If she isn't available and I'm desperate, then I use another hairdresser at the salon that charges £39. Both are wash, head massage, cut and blow dry. If I'm off out I'll get them to run the straighteners over too.

I dye it myself at the moment, so that costs about a fiver every couple of months.

Had mine done today in a suburban, but pretty trendy salon (ie not one of those "Hair by Doreen" places with lilac nets!). It was £20 for a cut & blow dry and straighteners to finish and my hair's mid-length.

I pay £30 for wash/cut and blow wave. Will only go to one hairdresser and he has been cutting my hair for the last 24 years. He has the same texture hair as me so knows how to cut it. Way back in the eighties we both used to have the same hair cut. LOL
I do know many women who pay £100 for a cut and blow.
My DD2 has just had hers cut and has had highlights put in it. The end price was £150.

I pay £12.50 for a wash cut and blowdry from a reasonably trendy salon in London. It's a no appointments necessary place (infact they don't make appointments at all, even if you ask), just turn up and wait for the next available stylist or wait a few minutes longer for your favourite stylist if you choose. The £12.50 is a fixed price, doesn't matter if it's a trim or a restyle, a senior stylist or junior.

I spent £25 on mine, cut & blow dry with straighteners. I have it done every 6-8weeks as my hair is graduated at the back so gets out of shape and my hair grows quickly!

Though I always have it done on a day where I have a nite out/special occasion to save me having to make it look tidy myself!

Mine costs around £80 cut and highlighted. Only have it done around every 3 months due to it takeing 3/4 hours to do and basically i'm just too lazy :o Also, the highlights blend into my natural colour so it doesn't look odd, or obviously i would have to force myself to go more often

We had our mobile hairdresser round on Saturday to cut my husband's, 19-year-old son's and mine with a blow-dry - in total, £22.

Our daughter even travels up from London to have hers cut, coloured (foils) and blow-dried. This time it was a complete re-style from mid length to short and the cost - £33. I reckon that's a lot less than she'd pay in London. She travels up to visit quite regularly so we just book the hairdresser in advance, she's become a good family friend and we'd find it hard to replace her.

I pay £15 & £2 tip for a wash & cut. I don't pay the extra £10 for a blowdry because I don't even like it blowdried anymore.

I go home & GHD it.

If I was going out from the hairdressers, I would get them to iron it, but I can do it just as well, so I save the £10.

I pay £5 on training days at my local salon for a C&BD the manager is Toni & Guy trained and always checks it over and sometimes does the odd snip here and there. Highlights (t-section) cost me £12 with a C&BD, but can't get it cut at same time as the girls are only qualified enough for the colour at that stage.

No probs so far, this time a tiny bit shorter than I'd planned, but hey it will soon grow and it means I won't need to go back quite so soon.

Cut, colour/s (foils) blow dry £60 and that is really cheap around here! I use root touch up inbetween. I used to colour mine at home all the time but it looks much better done professionally. I couldn't live without my straighteners either. In fact it really does cost a lot of time and money to look natural, what with the contact lenses and 'holiday skin' treatments!!

£35 for a cut and blow dry + £40 for a semi permanent colour (this is at a tiny but brilliant salon in Central London).

I can only afford to do this once every 4 months (£20 in budget for it per month) so I sometimes colour it myself at home in between.

I have been known to go to Toni & Guy Academy for a cheapie cut, but to be honest I just love my usual salon (http://www.malishi.com/) and my stylist (plus it takes half the time it would take at T&G Academy, and I don't have to waste a half-day off work...)

I pay about £65 every 6-8 weeks for colour (highlights in 2 shades & toner), wash, cut & blow-dry/style, this is in a city. I've been using the same hairdresser for nearly a year now since I graduated (before then, as a student, I dyed it at home & cut it myself!).

I feel it is a bit of an indulgence but worth what I get for that price, the price hasn't changed despite the colouring being slightly different each time, and the stylist is excellent at recommending what colour/cut etc because I don't have a clue about that kind of thing. I also tend to get my eyebrows shaped each visit which is £7.

3 years ago I paid around £130 for a consultation, cut and wonderful lowlights. I usually have long hair and was going from very long to just above shoulders.

It was a BIG change and I wanted to get it right so I booked the top guy at a posh salon in town. He was FAB and spent ages talking about skin tones, age, normal hair colour, lifestyle, different styles etc.

I came out feeling a million dollars and it was perfect so I didn't regret it one bit. Loads of people said I looked years younger!!:T :T

I went for a trim a couple of times and again, they did it beautifully and then I didn't have time so it's grown long again.:o
So I s'pose all that money over 3 years isn't too bad really??

I pay £17.50 for a wash and cut (I don't like hair dryers) in central London.

I have it cut every few months - I have long straight hair, so it doesn't need cutting that often.

C&BD about every 10 weeks and colouring/C&BD scheduled in every 4 months. It works out that I more or less alternate the two.

Been going to the same man since the mid 80's at a suburban hairdressers (no lilac nets! LOL :rotfl: )
He's likely to retire in the next 5 years, I don't know what I'll do then......

my hairdresser actually moved away from where i live and i now have to go to his salon which is 50 minutes drive away. At first my DH said he wouldn't go that far just for a haircut (my husband has his hair cut by the same hairdresser). He went to a different hair dresser but it turn out he is just as fussy as me. :rotfl: He said he wouldn't go to anyone else and We now go to my hairdresser together. :D To be honest i think once you find a hairdresser that can cut your hair and you are happy with it they are worth hanging onto. I have never thought of him retiring. I really don't know what i will do.
Glad i am not the only one to have had the same hairdresser for so long.

I spend £33 for a wash, cut and blow dry. I never used to be precious about my hair until I went to this salon when we moved. He listens to me, suggests things that he thinks will suit me and my lifestyle and he's always right.

DH was commenting the other night how before we moved, the previous salon just used to churn us out on a conveyor belt all looking the same whether it suited us or not. To be honest, I thought that I looked ok, but now with Giuseppe I feel great.

And his small talk is pretty good too. :D

Writing on this thread last night made me pull my socks up & get to the hairdresser!! I MUST try harder to remember little things like having hair trimmed.;)

Anyway, I have long (again!) hair, slightly wavy and just wanted the scraggy ends cutting off ... so about 2" I suppose and was in there no more than 10 mins and it cost £12. I thought that was pretty dear because it was just straight across, but there!

My DD had wash, cut and blow dry a few weeks ago at one of these places where you don't need an appointment and it cost A TENNER!! It's always very busy in there though. The girl was very pleasant and polite and did a smashing cut and we were both very pleased.

As I said above I pay £15 for a wash & cut, but I won't pay £10 for an iron because I can do it just as well (if not better, I will do it longer & hotter, so its POKER straight & lasts 2 days perfect).

BUT I would happily pay another £5 for somewhere that did a good head massage while they washed.
There was a young guy at the hairdressers used to be fabulas;)
Magic hands:D
But then he became a qualified hairdresser & stoppped washing, the others are no where near as good as him, now hes left anyway:mad:

I do love it when they put the conditioner in, comb it through & then do a head massage before rinsing:)

I think most women do too much to their hair. All I do to mine is wash it (about twice a week), brush it, and leave it alone. It means my hair is really shiny and healthy and natural looking. You can keep perms / colours / straighteners / hairspray, I think they spoil hair's natural beauty.

Had my haircut by the same guy for 20+ years but he is a long way away. Found a good local hairdresser who charges £47 - however, looked at their website, they have a junior, a trainee, stylist, a senior stylist, a Director and a Designer!! Not sure who cuts mine but everytime I have been there has only been a receptionist and my hairdresser (too frightened to ask her 'ranking' as she may do severe damage - lol). Judging by the lifestyle she leads I don't care about her title, I just know I am paying for it .... good while the convenience lasted but off on my travels to have my man run his fingers through my hair for a third of the cost (money saved will pay for my petrol and give me a weekend away!!)

i can firmly say that my hair without straighening or specially curling is anything but beautiful! without any of that i wake up with the 'stuck my finger in a plug socket' look! i can't pay enormous amounts of money, but it really is necessary to get it back under control :)

I pay virtually nothing. Sisters friend is a hairdresser so she trims it every 6 weeks for me for nothing. She will also highlight it if i want for just the cost of the dye but i havent had that done for a while.

One thing i will say is i have thick curly hair prone to dryness so i spend a fair bit maybe £20 a month on products to keep it under control and non frazzled looking. My hairstraightners were also a small fortune but i have had them 3 years so probably value for money.

OK I get my hair coloured - but it's mainly to give it body and remove some of the excess grease. The "lighter than my natural shade" suits my skin tone better too.
I'm now at the age when skin starts getting drier but my hair hasn't got the message yet!
I wash and blow dry twice a week at home - no tongs or straighteners for me.
I've stuck to the same suburban hairdresser because he cuts my hair well for a reasonable charge. The decor is a bit '70's, but I can live with that. If it was up to date I'd be paying more for my hair to be done.
I consider myself lucky if I'm offered a coffee (only if I'm there for highlights  ). Head massage isn't on the menu where I go - sounds lovely though.

She gave me mates rates at £20 i think its normally £30 with her. Well i get there and its very stylish looking place in a very small village. They had massaging chairs! She gave me a shampoo perfect head massage as well. The most stylish haircut i have had in years. I have had no end of comments i just have to save up for the colour/highlights she recommended! I used to pay about £40-£50 for a wash, cut, blow and straighten. I get my hair done from a salon in Hazel Grove (stockport) although last time i had a trainee cut my hair (she did a very good job!) and i paid £25 as she had not qualified yet.
For Hazel grove i would say thats a very good price as the salons use great products and have well trained hairdressers!
Although when she does qualify...then i will go back to paying £40-£50.
Just for your information, my mum works at a college and they are ALWAYS looking for people to come and get their hair done, they charge about £8 for a wash cute and blow i would say try that, although they are college students they will always have a teacher/mentor there so nothing would go wrong! £39 for a cut and blow dry at my local hairdressers.... in my opinion that's rather steep but looking at some of this thread it looks pretty cheap now :rotfl:

i'm growing mine so luckily i don't have to pay out for haircuts at the moment. i'm just doing my best to keep it in good condition. the last time i went i was charged £20 to have a dry trim of the ends and he cut off waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much. he only stopped because he noticed me grimacing and gripping the arms of the chairs with white knuckles! i was NOT a happy bunny.

why is it that most hairdressers interpret "just a little off the ends" as "please go completely mental and give me a half mullet"?!?! and what do you do if they take off too much? do you tell them straight away? do you refuse to pay them?

i had so many awful haircuts when i was younger that i decided to jack it all in and get dreadlocks. i've taken them out but i still have a pathological fear of hairdressers  i've never liked the whole experience of hairdressers apart from when you walk out! the unflattering capes, the uncomfortable basins you have to lie back on to have your hair washed, the mirror you have to sit in front of and stare at yourself for 45 minutes, the hair down the back of your tshirt, the holiday/love life/househunting obligatory conversation with the hairdresser, the "do i tip" worry when you pay.... i just find it way too stressful :rotfl:
