I am due to have my ears pierced this week and to be truthful, i have got the breeze up!!! this would be ok if i was a kid, but i am pushing 50! its something i have never done and my girls have treated me.
Does it hurt? its the thought of a thing going bang and making me jump!
Thanks

Is it the ear lobe you are having pierced? If so, I don't recall it hurting. It might make you jump a little but I'm sure you'll be fine :)

it might make you jump but won't hurt.... ask them to get you to do a big cough as they do it, that has worked for me with nasty holiday injections before now.. your body can't do the two things at once if you know what i mean.... didn't work when I had my tongue pierced though LOL!!!

you will feel a sting for a few seconds, nothing more.
make sure the place that you go to get pierced is fully insured with trained staff.that are hygeinic. certificates should ideally be on display. make sure you get advice for aftercare, too as you will need to look after your piercings while they heal . the gun doesnt really go bang , it sounds more like a "clip" noise
enjoy your new earrings xx

1st time i had mine done i cried but i was 5.
ive had them done 4 times since 2 lobe and 2 cartlige (sp?)
beleive me if it hurt that much i would of walked out after the first one going in - forget having a pair!!
the actual piercing doesnt really hurt, think .... pinging yourself with an elastic band nothing major. Afterwards they are a bit stingy but againg nothing major and definately worth it.

getting your lobes pierced doesnt "hurt" it feels like a tight pinch; pinch your ear lobe with your nail to get a similar effect :D . If possible try to choose gold or sterling silver earings, they tend to cause less infections.

Good Luck!

Don't want to put you off but....

I had my earlobes done three times. First time the gun didn't go through properly, second time the gun got stuck so I had to hold it on my ear while they fiddled about with it, third time went wonderfully.

Baby.Boo - wow, you must have such a pain threshold! I have had 2 cartilage piercings and they have both hurt like hell! I'm impressed.

Fairycake, getting your ear lobes pierced really doesn't hurt much, just a pinch or a sting as has been previously said. I don't think that many kids would get theirs done so young if it hurt a lot!

Good luck and enjoy the new choices that come with pierced ears!

Cartilage is nothing compared to a "scaffold" piercing.

Can I ask what a scaffold piercing is?

@eyeliner - i always assumed that they did two sepearte piercings and allowed those to heal before inserting a scaffold (because of swelling etc). do you know how they do go about it?

Please don't go anywhere that will use a gun. Go to a proper piercing studio. A piercing gun will hurt more, and sin't actually a very good way of doing it. You need it doing with a needle, as that is sharper.

Pavlov's dog, a scaffold depends on the studio. Some will make you heal it as two separate piercings and then put one long bar in later. Some places will put the long bar in straight away. Both ways have advantages and disadvantages.

Wow - Ouch!!!! I have one in the ridge on the inside of my ear and one through the base of 'cup' at the bottom of your ear (not sure what you'd call it) and they both hurt more than a little. Can't remember how much the first one swelled (about 6 years ago) but remember not being able to sleep on my side for a month. The other one (Jan this year) has taken almost 3 months for the swelling to be completely sorted. I can't imagine how much a scaffolding would hurt or how long it would take to heal!

Learn something every day!
Thanks pavlov!

ear piercing is fine... lobes are pretty pain free - cartlidge piercing stings a bit - nose piercing dont go their (i cried and wrinkled up my nose in pain that the ring had to be held down.. ears are easy though i have 3 lobe piercings each side (first done when i was a child proffesionly and the other 2 done by myself) i would not have done this if it was 2 painfull!!

juno - gun piercing is only a bad idea for areas other than the lobes.
guns or needles are fine for lobe piercings!!

How about you stick to correcting me when I'm wrong?

Guns are barbaric, and are never ok. Decent piercers will not use guns.

I had my lobes pierced by gun when I was young and my tragus done by needle two years ago. I'd go for a piercer with a needle every time now rather than a shop assistant in Claires with a gun!

I agree, having had both methods used (three in each lobe and one in the cartilage). The gun method causes trauma to the area, more pain and more swelling according to the studio where I had my nose done with a needle ;) . Either way I didn't find piercing that painful, but I'm told I have a high pain threshold, after having to have a tooth removed without anaesthetic due to an allergy:eek: .

Guns are evil and usually covered in bacteria due to the lack of ways to get them steralised!

I had my lobes pierced when I was 7 (or maybe 8). I can't remember much about it. Just it stinging a bit and being in tears but I was a 7 year old with a low pain threshold.lol.

With mine it was pierce, pierce, bar, there you go, you know about the aftercare, see you later. They're supposed to let the piercings heal but the place I went do didn't for some reason.

Lol, tell me about it.

One of my friends fainted after she got her ears pierced. She refuses to get another piercing now.

I love my peircings, tragus, tongue 3in each lobe and Navel
Never let someone near you with a gun - go to a pro peircer and get it done with a needle, It will heal quicker and wont sting anywhere near as bad.

You dont have to believe me. there are many peircing boards out there that will tell you the same!

when i was in high school i was about 14 all the other girls had the top of their ears pierced i felt left out so i got my friend to do it for me, with a earring and nothing else she just shoved it in and away i went :) it didnt get infected or anything and my mum went mad when she found out. it didnt hurt 1 bit :)

the noise might make you jump but thats about it :)

good luck

Steph xx

I tried to stretch the one on the top of my ear cos I had a stud I really wanted to use...

It bled a lot but didn't hurt.

Ear piercings are nothing you'll be fine =]

I had my nose done, the first night I lost the stud and the hole healed up on the inside. I had to go back the next day and have it re-pierced was a right pain because he couldn't find the whole so I was sat for the best part of 10 minutes having a needle wiggled around in my nose haha.

With ear piercings, I'd say get them done with a needle if possible but if in doubt you can always have them both done at the same time.

Can I ask what a scaffold piercing is?I do wish you hadn't asked that ... or maybe that pavlovs_dog hadn't given an illustrated answer! :rotfl:

fairycake, you might find this older thread (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=201668) of interest. And if anyone's wondering, the answer's no. I could tell DH wasn't that keen. At least that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! Plus I got a rather beautiful ring for that birthday instead - you know how sometimes you see something, and it just has your name on it?

But please don't let that put YOU off!

Thanks to all of you who replied to this thread. I have actually had them done and it was fine, no pain, just a pinching feeling and they look great.
Dont know why i was so worried!
Really appreciated your comments.
Thanks again

I've had 10 peircings in total- 7 of which were with the gun. I've never had any problems witha single one of them. They were all proffesionally done- no trauma, yes they were clean and yes lobes can safely be done with the gun.

And it hurts a hell of a lot less. I prefer the gun to the needle. I've grown quite fond of the noise now.

It's not safe. Guns physically cannot be steralised properly. Needle piercings are quicker and don't hurt a bit.

I had no idea that ear piercing could be done any other way than by using a gun.

This going on the fact that i've visited places 4 times to have my ears pierced, so 8 gun noises in total. I had my 1st set when i was 8, 2nd at 12, 3rd at 14 and my 4th at 15.

Didn't hurt one bit for me, otherwise i wouldn't of gone back. But i would of liked to experience the needle way, just to be able to compare the difference.
