Early MOT question

Hi, I think this is the correct board, if it's not, feel free to move.

My MOT is due at the end of the month, I am trying to sell my car and obviously this is putting people off. I have no reason to think it will fail, it passed straight thru last year & I've had no problems since.

Anyway...If I ask the garage to do an MOT this week, does the certificate cover me til the end of May 2009? Or does it bring the MOT due date forward? :confused: i.e. if I get it done on the 5th, will my Mot be due 5th May next year? :confused:

You can MOT your car up to 1 month in advance, you need to advise garage of this (and some want to see current MOT). Then the new MOT will expire on the same date as current one but 2009. i.e. expires 1st June 2008, MOT now and will expire 1st June 2009.

You can have MOT up to one month early. The certificate will show 12 months from expiry of the old one, but you must produce the old one at the test.

You can put it throught an MOT upto 28 days before the test is due. You need to take the old (current) MOT certificate with you to the test and they will issue the new one with a starting date that will be the day after your current one expires, say your MOT runs out on the 2nd of June, the new certificate will be valid from 3rd of June this year till 2nd June next year.

That's great guys thanks, I'll take it in this week, hopefully the car should shift quicker with 12 months MOT.

Thunderbird, DF journey going good thanks for asking, hoping to be debt free by end of the year. I should be able to pay off the final loan in next month or 2, which will just leave the credit card.

Update;

If your current certificate was done on the new computerised M.O.T. system, it is not necessary to take your old certificate with you. An early M.O.T. can be done up to one month before the expiry of your old certificate. So if your certificate runs out on the 4th of the month, you can take your car in from the 5th of the previous month.

OMG:eek:, thankfully mine passed so it was only £27 although I did ask for a quote for a new clutch and was quoted £600! Perhaps it's only cheap if you are sure it will pass.

best place for a mot is a council run test centre
they have no motive for looking for work it will pass or fail/advise if it needs to be

I agree with mcjordi about the council MOT stations.

Never, ever use Nationwide Autocentre. If you know a reliable independent garage then use them instead.
