View Full Version : One flabby mother!
Well my 2nd child is nearly 8 months old now and I seemed to have put on 4 stone rather than lose it:mad:
Anyway I will get to the point and ask what people think is the best exercise machine out there.
Im doing slimming world but find no time to tone up, I need the obvious bum, tum, arms and legs.
I was thinking a rowing machine would do the trick for me??
What are anyone elses thoughts on the best machine out there???
Many thanks for reading.

Going for walks is best.

I second the walking (even try carrying a bottle of water in each hand and swing your arms as you walk, great for firming up your arms) but if you really want an exercise machine get one that will be easy for you and something you won't get bored of. What about an exercise bike? Have a look on freecycle too.
Also look after you skin, drink plenty of water and use a good body moisturiser. I got Nivea Q10 firming body lotion from Tesco for 1.80, its fab! and really helps tighten your skin.
Im doing a lot more walking and hoping my husband will buy me a double buggy but he has also offered to get me a machine of some sort, I didnt want to rush into getting something that wont suit me.

Brisk walking for at least for half an hour a few times a week, obviously with healthy eating. If you do want a machine, I would say a cross trainer, it's not hard on your joints. My husband has lost a stone and a half in a few months by using this machine regularly and he still enjoys a drink or two;).

Walking is enough exercise for now. Swimming if you can fit it in. When you become a bit fitter you could try jogging a few times a week. But you have to work up to it. Walking a bit, jog a bit . I have a book called Run for life by Sam Murphy which will get you running in 7 weeks. Try walking first see how you go.

I'm really tempted to get something like this (http://www.gamebike.com/index.php?id=21) because I usually lose interest in static machines very quickly. I used something like this once, many years ago, and still remember being so impressed at how the time flew by, I didn't even realise I was exercising! (Couldn't walk for the next three days, but that's beside the point:rotfl: ).
Otherwise, I'd be going for a dance mat or interactive wii games (some of them are really good for dancing and prancing about like an idiot:o ).
Walking is a great base exercise though - you can always increase your time and your speed and vary your terrain.
Best of luck.

the cross trainer whittles your waist as well. I use it at the gym and I walk everywhere if I can and I also got a bike a few years ago from KAys catalogue for £80 - and I use that when the weather gets warmer and go down the canal path to the next town and back. Good for keeping cool and good for the legs and bum.:j

I don't which machines would be best but myself, MIL and 2 SIL go to aqua tone and legs bums and tums once a week. The classes start from 8pm, might be worth checking your local leisure centre.
There is a dvd by Micha Hudson called bums and tums, hmv are selling at £4.99 with free delivery at the moment, i've ordered myself one, might be best when the kids are in bed.
We're also thinking about taking up belly dancing, don't laugh :D :D if you feel a little tremor tomorrow night around 7pm it's just us shaking our wobblys :rotfl:

I don't suppose you have a Nintendo Wii do you? If you do you could always get Wii Fit (http://www.play.com/Games/Wii/4-/5211447/-/Product.html?searchstring=wii+fit&searchsource=0) which is out in a week and a half.

I wouldn't bother with an exercise machine if I were you. As others have said try walking. Another option if the weather isn't great is use your stairs at home, step up to the first one then back down, then go up step one and two then back down. Do that all the way to the top.
You could also try body weight exercises, like squats, press ups, burpees etc.
Also don't forget to clean up your diet, diet is probably 80% of getting in shape.
HTH and good luck.

I too wouldn't buy a machine as eventually it will probably end up gathering dust and not being used. How about buying some velcro weights to go around you wrists and ankles. These should make the walking even more successful.
Good luck, I am in the same boat but after my first. Although I have got to get moving as I will never fit back into my work clothes in four weeks time at this rate!!!

Rather than velcro weights, you could also carry bottles of water, or take a back pack with some heavy items in.

I am a bit concerned about going up the stairs like this, although it is good excercise, you could trip and fall while taking the steps backwards. I would rather just go up the stairs, walk back down then go up again. Agree with the rest of the post though. What are burpees:confused:

I take dog out 7 days a week... ahhh. *brisk* walking. Doh, that's what I'm doing wrong :p
*healthy* eating?
Good luck to you all, I wish I had a motivation/esthetic bone in my body...
Have a look on freecycle, You could kit a gym out with all the kit that is offered on there.

Yes you could trip, so it's better to be careful.
For a really good workout, do circuit training. Try the following;
1 minute non stop (for as many as you can do) squats, press ups and burpees, once you have done all 3 exercises do 45 seconds of all 3 again, then do 30 seconds of all 3 again then do 15 seconds of all 3 again.
Rest as needed, but keep it short if possible. Will definately be a very good workout, and you'll feel very fatigued!

Also remember to warm up and cool down and do your stretches or you may pull a muscle and not be able to excercise for a few more weeks
Bedroom sports are also good but thats what got you in to this :)

I had never lost weight since littleburd but since healthier eating and regular brisk walks (3 or 4 a week for an hour and a bit) I've lost almost a stone in a month. I like a hic... beverage of a night and don't give it up but when eating and weighing less I can't drink too much anyhoo! Never mind the extra weights - the babies in the buggy is extra enough! Good luck. X

MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=1009335#post1009335)) so this post/thread has been moved to the Health board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com (abuse@moneysavingexpert.com).
You'll find several threads over there about losing weight, exercise, etc.
But do it now, it's no fun when the 'babies' are 16, 18, and 20 ...
