Can anyone explain why the cost of petrol and diesel is rising at present.
The chancellor stated Petrol/Diesel would be increased by 2p in October this year.
I live in Cheshire and since then we have had massive increases. We were at £1.02 for petrol and £1.05 for Diesel. It seems to go up every week , now £1.09 for petrol and £1.15 for Diesel.
What does this mean and how much will it be before we get to the official 2p rise in October.
Do the garages have an autonomous right to increase as they see fit ?

It's rising because the cost of crude oil is rising but only in US Dollars. Sadly oil is traded in USD so whilst the value of the USD continues to fall, the $ value of crude goes up so oil is perceived as getting more expensive hence the price rises.

Garages can charge what they want. It's no different from any other retail establishment.

Just to add, as a percentage of income, petrol and diesel is actually cheaper than it was 20 years ago when I first started driving.
