Hi All,
Anyone sold a car privately & can recommend where to advertise? I've stuck it on free Trade It website & put a sign up in it, but no joy yet.
It seems quite expensive to advertise in all the different publications, so wondered which ones you have had best success with?
I'm after in the region of £1200 for it, which seems about right in comparison with others advertised.
Need to sell it in the next 12 days or the insurance will run out - AARRGGGHHHHH!
Advice please?
Thanks,
FE

Car auction, 7 day listing on eBay if you have an account or free adverts on this site www.wooo.co.uk (http://www.wooo.co.uk)
Hello FairyElephant
I'll move your thread to the 'Motoring & Public Transport' board.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=1009335#post1009335)) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com (abuse@moneysavingexpert.com).

What car is it?
I listed my (performance) car on www.pistonheads.com (http://www.pistonheads.com) and sold it within a week..
Also what about owners forums for sale sections? Free and people who have an interest in the specific car will see it listed ;)

You have to price it right - cheaper than other similar cars, but not so cheap that people think there's something wrong with it.

Exactly, price it right, clean it up and use free adds.
If you or a friend live on a main road, park the car on the front with a prominent sign, almost always brings quick results in my experience.
If it is not a bargain it will not sell quickly so balance the extra hassle/risk of having it sat around uninsured and factor that into your asking price.;)

Bare in mind that the £1200 quoted as the figure for similar cars is the asking price, not the actual selling price.
If you want a quick sale, consider listing yours at £995,( under the £1000 mark ).;)
I think the autotrader section for under £1000 is cheaper listing.
Ebay is probably your best bet though.

Agree with others advertised price and selling price are two different things. So it probably make less than £1,000.

Start it on Ebay at 99p then people pay what they want to pay and you get rid of it quickly.

Thanks All for your advice.
A bit more info on the situation:
Similar car to mine seems to be advertised in my area at £1395 - it's a year newer than mine but MUCH higher mileage, as mine is V.low mileage for it's year.
I'm actually willing to take £1000, which is why I pitched it at £1200, although you are right, if I advertise it at under £1000 it is cheaper, but I guess i'll still end up having to take an offer on it, as everyone wants to haggle and feel that they got a bargain (guess I am no exception to that!).
I have to pay back £500 to my parents when I sell it, and I really need the other £500 to pay my OU fees as I've taken the plunge to go back to studying.....so don't want to take much less than the £1000.....

Put it up for sale and see what response you get, that'll show you it's true value;)

As has been said, price it to sell.
Also a bit suprised no-one has said stick an A4 ad in the windows. Park the car somewhere people walk past frequently and preferably has slow moving traffic. Make sure the price is large enough to see at a glance from a distance, why people put FOR SALE on an advert in a car is completely beyond me
Spend a few hours polishing it and hoovering it, make sure you clean the inside of the door jams too! If its a £1000 car most people don't see past the shine, aslong as it looks ok to the neighbours they dont care if its a dog.
My record for selling in this way is 4 hours. :D

Be realistic with the adverts, and it will be sold..

Just sold mine through Autotrader. This was the first time I've gone the much cheaper web-only option (not in the printed mag) ad and it seemed to work fine.
What I did notice that apart from isolated idiot calls (offering me 90% of asking price) I got the serious calls after what is normally payday for a lot of people i.e. end of the month.

I always do just this first. I've sold every car I've ever put up, 2 caravans, sets of wheels etc etc and even given free firewood logs away like this.
My record was my 1o year old Vectra that I sold a year ago. Put it up with a sign on at 3.00|Friday afternoon, just went inside to get the polishing gear and when I came out someone was looking at it. It was collected Sat am.
BUT, it was taxed tested and realistically priced. I also didnt budge from my asking as a result of that;) ;) ;)
