Hi Everyone
Ok, firstly Im a student, I need some transport during the summer, jobs etc. I got banned last year for Drink Drive. Got a 9 months ban and fine. Thats all gone now but the lowest price I've been able to get is £1152 for third party, F & T. This is for a MK4 VW POLO. Is there anyway I can get it cheaper? I would like to hear from people who this has happened to. I have done the rehab course offered by the judge but all of the companies provided in the booklet on completion have offered high quotes E.G £2000+. This quote was from a specialist broker. I have got quotes and it isnt a lot higher for a smaller/cheaper car e.g Renault Clio (old 94-98 plate,) VW polo mk2 (fox etc.)
If I can't get it lower I am considering buying a moped, a really cheap old 'bicycle and motor kind of arrangement.' Ive costed at:
£200 for insurance (got quotes, FP, F & T)
£100-200 for bike (50CC)
£70 for CBT
£40 for helmet & gloves.
Definatley cheaper than reinsuraning the car for a year after the ban, as I can't get 6 month insurance with the conviction and my age for a decent price.
PLEASE ONLY PEOPLE WITH ADVICE/EXPERIANCE, NO ONE CRITISING ME FOR MY PREVIOUS MISGIVINGS.
Thanks Again.

have you read martins technique (see link below) this will help you get the best deal having searced all the ins cos
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/compare-cheap-car-insurance
You've got a DD offence on your licence. Don't expect cheap insurance for the next few years. You're lucky to have managed to get a quote that low TBH.

Best off sticking to the motorbike cos it wont drop for quite a few years. My OH got banned for Dangerous Driving, he got quotes for £1000+ although I suspect he is older than you, so basically he got a job which gave him a van/car insured (yes he did get employed even with a DD40) and now some 5 years later his insurance is down to £200. So I'd stick to the bike option for a few years. AND Dont do it again!

If you have nothing decent to say, you know the rest. I've done my time and will pay the price. You know, not everything is as clear cut as you think. Reading one point over on the breath test is what I call, and what the judge called unlucky, along with everyone else I have spoken too, including the solicitor.

You drank, then you drove - what's not clear cut about that. The test you take at the police station is *very* accurate so it's not unlucky. Simplest solution is to not drink anything at all and then drive, it's not a gamble then.
I too think you're lucky getting such a cheap insurance quote, I'd be well chuffed if I was stupid enough to drink/drive, be banned and then be able to get insurance for £1153

If the +/- of a Calibrated Intoximeter ECIR unit at the station is so accurate, why do they take 2 samples then take the average? Flow and heat make a difference as with any ionic analyser, among other things.
Anyway, I'm not questioning that, I'm saying I blew one point over. had a Urine test and was still bang on the line.
One Point less and I would have got away with a caution (thats at 35-39 g/100ml.) How many pints is it? You ever driven on 2 pints before? Its easier to get done than you think.
BTW, I got pulled over for a defective offside breaklight.
I am asking for advice.

It's a cheap shot blasting the OP for their crime; they seem well aware of it and have come for advice.
I'd recommend searching out specialist insurers, try a google search.

Do you have a table of how stupid people based on their crimes and how pleased you are with various problems they have?
Sorry but you deserve it, im glad you cannot afford the insurance.
Why are you glad? Are you glad that there's loads of uninsured cars on the road because an 18 year old might receive a few hundred pound fine for not having insurance versus a £2K premium?

I am aware of it, very aware, having your license taken for a year for something so stupid is such a ripper. Seems the perfect crew above love posting helpful comments everywhere. Infact, they only seem to be active when other people are leaning over the parapit and they are ready to push.
blah blah, yeah you know you were stupid and probably wont do it again you don't need anyone preaching at you.
But as a rule if I am driving, I drink nothing alcoholic no matter what, but that is just a personal call. My cheapest night out was 40p including all my soft drinks. :D
I think you will struggle for insurance with the usual suspects like Direct Line etc and would be best searching for a specialist.
I know Admiral like young drivers, so you may be lucky with them because of the age, but I think again with you a student AND the ban you will struggle with anyone.
Google is your best bet for car insurance.
But I would personally suggest the motorbike option you mention.
If you stick around these forums mate, I wouldn't blame you if you didn't, but if you do you will notice there are alot of high and mighty types. Just ignore them, I do. :)

If have a look at this (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=10130305&postcount=69) post, you'll see that not everything is black and white. Better to get the full story, because we all know what "assume" makes. ;)
Now people, if we can take our blinkers off for a minute, the OP asked a question about insurance prices. If you want to flame people - go elsewhere.

Whilst I would never condone drink driving on any level, I agree with that, these forums are well known for the "moral minority" on other sites lol. Same lot that think everone in debt sits there in a council house with a widescreen telly and gold chains round their neck whilst trying to rip off those lovely moral honest types at the bank lol.
I personnally don't drink and drive at all now (not even one glass), but at 19 was a passenger in a car where the driver had drunk 2 pints and could like the OP have been borderline. You live and hopefully learn, but you can't blame the insurance companies. Go through the comparison sites, but I doubt you will get a quote much under 1k.

And I said I thought just over £1000 was reidicuolously cheap. I paid £750 for my first years insurance and all the other insurance companies were £1000 plus, and I was 26 at the time and just got my license. So £1000 is ridiculously cheap.
There seems to be arising a "you can drink and drive so long as you don't go over the police's test limit" argument arising.

Another option is to sell the Mk4 polo and buy a banger car from the under £1000 section of autotrader, and use the funds from the polo to fund the insurance.

Were has this been said anywhere? Go imply what you want to imply but no-one has even hinting at this.
Once again, im asking for advice. Im going to ask for this thread to be shut if this keeps carrying on as its just a waste of good webspace, webspace that could be used for the "Cheapest options to get a moped on the road", thread.

Already said that in the OP, do you ever say anything constructive?

Not at all. It was higher when you got into the car than when you got stopped.

What is the point of this comment? Just give the OP a kicking for the hell of it. Hope it made you feel better!

Legally you can. There seems to be a zero tolerance argument arising.

No morality judgement.....
It may be worth looking at the PAYD approach depending on your mileage. Norwich Union is a good starting point for that policy.

Problem is most people do not know the legal limit in terms of amount of drinks. The easiest method is to not drink at all than to drink a couple of pints and get caught taking a gamble.

However you seemed to rule it out for nothing other than it doesn't make the insurance cheaper. Constructive point is selling will get you money and lower your overall costs, and even actually pay for the insurance so you don't have to.

Not at all. It was higher when you got into the car than when you got stopped.
Not to mention being arrested and taken to the testing machine in the police station etc.
