Not sure if this is the right thread, but wondered what the position is if wanting time off to see doctor.

DD is on summer job as student and did not want to take time off or the day off sick.

She got an appointment for just after 5p.m. and asked to leave work 10 mins early - her boss agreed.

Just before she was due to leave - another boss came in and "went mental" saying she was not allowed to leave early.

DD stood up for herself and said that she had arranged it with her boss - that she was going - if he wanted to sack her he was welcome!

She has been working without any breaks when they were busy and to say she is hard working is an understatement.

I am furious at the attitude of this ignorant bully and would like to find out what the official position is.

With GPs only open in normal office hours - how are people who do not want to go sick, supposed to manage?

Your employer must give you reasonable opportunity to attend to any medical problem you may have, that is not to say you have to be paid for absent time though, however if colleagues are given "free time" ie time off with pay to attend appointments then there can be no discrimination and the same should apply to all. I have experience of such matters but unfortunately it is dated and I know legislation has changed on this since my last dealings, if your daughter is a union member advise her to consult her rep as there may well be an agreement between the union and employer in relation to this. It may be that the individual concerned was just having a bad hair day and took it out on your daughter, there may be other considerations perhaps protocol not being followed. If your daughter is likely to be receiving a course of treatment that will be requiring future time off you would do well to check this out thoroughly for fear of repetition of a similar reaction in the future.

I'm sorry I can't help you further but my knowledge on this subject is stale and I am unable to source current legislation at the moment.

I work for a LA and we are not given paid leave for GP, Dental or Optican appointments anymore. If you are absent during core hours (we operate a flexi system core hours 9.30-12pm 2pm-3.30pm) then that counts as your 1 day per month flexi leave allowed. If you have to go twice in a month to the GP and violate core time again then you are disciplined. Up until about 7 years ago you were allowed upto 3 hours paid leave. You didn't need to provide proof of appointment and it was widely abused. However if we have a hospital appointment, including physio etc then we are allowed time off.

Hi The company that I work for likes you to rota around any appointments but if that is not possible you will have to make up the time. I dont think they can stop any medical appointments they have to work around them. Annie
