I have to travel through S. Wales tomorrow which will entail using the old Severn bridge in one direction only. I seem to remember that tolls only used to be applicable in one direction and that was leaving Wales, can anyone please tell me if this is still applicable and if so is it free leaving or entering Wales ?

Not sure about on the old bridge, but you definitely pay on the way IN to Wales on the new (M4) bridge. I seem to recall it was that way too on the old one, but it's a while since I used the old one.....

You have to pay to get into Wales - I think it's now £4.80, or at least it is on the new bridge.

From the above link BLUE BADGE holders note
Disabled Badge Holders Procedure

On arrival at a manned toll booth, you will need to hand your Blue Disabled Persons Badge to the Toll Collector. The Toll Collector will check the validity of the Badge, that the Badge Holder is in the vehicle and will record the Badge details. The Badge Holder will then be asked to sign a form, if they are unable to sign, the driver can sign on their behalf. The Badge will be returned and the barrier raised for you to continue your journey.

It doesn't mention on the site about which direction is free! Anyone help?? I'm off to Swansea for a break (woohoo!:)) and would like to go that way across the bridge. But I don't want to pay £4.80 for it!

It's free to leave Wales,so when heading back to England you won't pay:D

I thank you all for your replies. I have the option of entering Wales up North & leaving via Severn bridge or vice-verse. The mileage will be the same so I thought I'd try & do a bit of moneysaving and cut out the toll fee. At least it will go towards the 92.9 p/litre which I've just put in the tank !
Incidentally, this was not intended to be a nationalistic post about paying to get into Wales, (although the thought did cross what's left of my mind).
I'll report back tomorrow if it is still free to enter the greatest country on earth via the old Severn bridge.

Sorry steady eddie, you will have to pay to enter Wales on the old severn bridge, you could alternatively go up the M5 take the Gloucester turnoff and go via the Forest of Dean or Ross on Wye and then past Monmouth. Beautiful scenery :)

As there are two separate crossings, can I assume that each crossing is a one-way crossing or will I have to choose?

And quit knocking Wales!!!

Each bridge is bi-directional and bi-lingual (the signs are in English and Welsh at both ends) The one you use will probably depend upon which motorway that you are using, M4 or M48. I wasn't too impressed, it was a bit scary for me, all that water and waves, I had to close my eyes half way across and change my seat cover at the other end.
You'll have to pay when leaving England though whichever one you use.
Anyway, who is knocking the Welsh besides Anne Robinson, helen 21, Trafalgar and a few million others ? Certainly not me squire.

The way I look at it is that you have to pay for quality ....

Make sure you have cash! they don't take cards.

If you don't have the money, they won't take your address, they will shut ALL the barriers, they send a Range Rover with flashing lights tol come over to your lane, your barrier will raise, then they will escort you over a little bridge that takes you back the way you came NO EXCEPTIONS.

Us Royal Mail drivers use Tags, but if we forget to take one, they will turn us around, even though we spend thousands of pounds with them.

Can anyone hazard a politically correct guess as to why there is only payment due in one direction ? Don't let Gordon hear anything about this though as he might try to use this anomoly to extricate himself from impending black hole which everyone says he is approaching.

Don't let Gordon hear anything about this though as he might try to use this anomoly to extricate himself from impending black hole which everyone says he is approaching.I would have thought it is clearly money saving to only build one lot of toll booths, employ only one set of workers and also time saving for everyone concerned. Of course there will be some occasions where people are able to come into Wales and go back the other way (M50 or up through Chepstow etc.) but presumably the most traffic comes in through the east, including European trucks etc. heading for Wales & Ireland, and it's carefully priced to make it uneconomical petrol and time-wise (an hour plus extra on your journey).

If you take a guess at the amount of cars, trucks etc. going through in the two or three minutes you take to cross over and guess how much money is coming in....

This is one subject that always makes my blood pressure rise...

I always ask for a receipt so I feel like I've got something for my £4.80, it usually includes on it an offer to get a reduced price on a coffee & cake which are already extornionately priced and has to be taken at the next services or similar.

I wasn't too impressed, it was a bit scary for me, all that water and waves, I had to close my eyes half way across and change my seat cover at the other end.
Are you sure you weren't trying to drive through the estuary rather than cross the bridge?!

Went down to S. Wales last week - M6/M5/M4. What a drag and didn't realise there was a toll until too late. Came back Sat on A449 through Monmouth, Ross-on-Wye.
As Tom_Jones says above, a fantastic road - beautiful scenery, dual carriageway, virtually deserted. I wish I'd gone down that way. A bit of a shock then, though, when you rejoin the M5/M6.

Best thing my daughter ever did moving from Rhoose to Abergavenny. Now I can use the A40 to get there instead of that blasted M4 and the bridge and now the speed traps.

Yes, I found the speed traps. My GPS warned of a mobile camera at every overhead bridge, and there are a lot of them. Unfortunately, I never saw any cameras on the first dozen or so, got bored of it, ignored it and got zapped. I am expecting a ticket shortly.
