i was at the hospital today for an appointment and while the nurse was examining me she mentioned that me cervix is low. in september i had an operation to remove some pre-cancerous cells so i have been prodded and poked 'down there' a lot of the past year and nobody mentioned this. the nurse asked if i ever had any problems with anything so i told her that it hurts whenever i'm examined and when when i have smear tests it hurts like hell and i bleed. to top it all off i also have an erosion on my cervix aswell
does anybody know what this means and if it has any implications?
i know i could have asked the nurse but i was struck dumb and didnt really think about it until after i left

AFAIK the position of your cervix shifts throughout the month. I can't now remember which way round it is, but it is either at its highest or lowest when you are at ovulation, and the opposite when you are menstruating. If you google some of the fertility awareness sites it would clarify this. Given the amount of gynae intervention you've had in the past, if this was anything to be concerned about someone more qualified than a practice nurse would surely have mentioned it before now.

Might be worth going to a family planning clinic and asking about it. Certainly here they'll see you whether you have family planning needs or not (or you could always get some condoms if you want to be a real customer). They have all sorts of experience in the 'downstairs' department - it's their specialism so they tend to know loads about any gynae problems. And it's normally quite a relaxed atmosphere where you feel you can ask about stuff. Might be worth a try

But I agree with Nicki, if it was a problem you would def have heard about it by now. It's probably like having a slightly big nose or something :)

I have cell erosion and it IS painful to have smears etc. (I can't use tampons either because they hurt.)

Medical advice isn't allowed on the forum though so you need to speak to the FP clinic again to set your mind at rest.

Your cervix is high around ovulation, and low just before/during your period. I was told my cervix is slightly off to one side, it's never been an issue apart from to warn the nurse before she takes a smear so it's not uncomfortable My 2nd child is due in May :) so it seems everything works fine despite the strange position!

I have always had a 'low' cervix. It makes smear tests uncomfortable and successive nurses have commented on it. Otherwise I haven't had any problems.

i don't really have any trust in my local dr's/hosp as everytime i've been in for something to do with my 'problem' something ends up going wrong, the last time i ended up off work for 3 weeks!!
i didn't think it would be anything too serious or the nurse wouldn't have just said that and let me go but due to my past probs i do tend to worry a bit.
i didn't know that your cervix moves about depneding on your cycle as i'm on the pill and only have a period every 4 months.

Quite a few years ago I was on the pill and had a cervical erosion. It's nothing to worry about and the cells from the inner part of the cervix are 'soft'. If you've been taking the pill for some time it can cause these soft cells to move to the outer part of the cervix, so if you put in a tampon or have penetrative sex this can cause you to bleed.

I went to my Dr who referred me to the hospital. All they do is 'freeze' the area on the cervix to toughen up the cells. I've had no problems since and it is quite common with women who are on the pill. It's not life threatening, just annoying really. It is treated quickly and as an out patient. Just see your Dr to get a referral, unless things have changed and they can do it at your GP surgery.

I have a low cervix too (anterior?). The midwife (I wasn't pregnant, long story!) told me it was a good thing in terms of being examined, because things were easier to see. Assuming that was all they were referring to, it is nothing to worry about x

tilted and low cervixes are quite common,as are cervical erosions.I had one over thirty years ago,had it frozen and it never came back.It realy is nothing to worry about.Just something else for us girls to have to put up with.
