Second hand car blues

Bought a ten year old car last July for £2000.00. In September had to pay £450.00 to replace clutch, solonoid and front brake fitting kit. In January paid for a new catalytic converter and centre/rear exhaust - before we had work done - rang dealer and he just seemed to say 'oh well'. Now some sort of thrust bearing has gone and we have been quoted £700 - I have been trying to find out whether I can ask the dealer for compensation. Any help would be much appreciated.

Unless you was given a warranty with the car no. Things go wrong with cars unfortunately and they need repairing - there is no way the seller could have known any of those things were going to go faulty. Clutch is wear and tear, solenoid couldn't possibly have known it would fail if the car started fine.

It could even be the case that the places you took the car to did unnecessary work. Seems unusual that the cat, centre *AND* rear exhausts all needed replacing at once. Kwik fit is one of those known for doing unnecessary work.

Sorry I can't give better news, but if you need to buy with a warantee if you need faults to be covered/repaired.

agree with Anewman it seems strange that they didnt check the thrust bearing when doing the clutch and if its only £450 for the clutch why the hell are they saying £700 for the bearing alone

ahh,but look it was a dealer he bought it from.still a bit much for a 10 year old car.it may be something special?

That did happen to me with my old Fiesta. Whilst the cat was the only part which actually broke, the rest of the exhaust was almost rusted through as well. After I had the cat fixed (at Kwik Fit, who were significantly cheaper than the independent garages) it was only another month before the rear pipe snapped. With hindsight, getting it all done at once would probably have saved a few pounds on labour costs but never mind.

Unless you have a warranty you can whistle and rightly so, once a car is ten years old theres not much that can go wrong which would be considered completely abnormal

Quite a few luxury vehicles can cost this and plenty more besides.

Its an easy trap to fall into to buy a 'nice' car when its quite old without realising that the running costs are going to be higher because repairs are more costly and that you you've put too much money in to just throw it away if something serious breaks (bitter experience with six year old Jaguar some time ago:rolleyes: ).

My 9 year old cost £6k...and, so long as it remains in good repair and condition, due to supply and demand it isn't depreciating at the moment either.

However, my 8 year old Avensis is worth 1,200 and falling.....
