I am having an endoscopy on Monday and have been offered the choice of either a numbing spray in my throat or a sedative by injection.
I am inclined to take the spray. What do people think?
Thanks
Margaret

Netdoctor information (http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/health_advice/examinations/gastroscopy.htm)It looks to me as if the decision depends more on how you are going to get home after the event.
If you need to drive yourself home after the least sedation the better.
So I think you've probably picked the best option.

Thankyou for that lead. It was very enlightening.

Although I don't have to drive I think I'll have the spray!
Thanks again

Hi Margaret

Ive had a couple of these using both methods for my swallow problem.

The first time I chose the spray as all the others were having it. As Im a bit of a wince - it didnt go down well.

Second time I think I was half knocked out first. I could still feel the thing going down my throat & felt like throwing up all the time.

Eventually they managed to get the probe down & I could see everything on their TV. They could pin-point to the milimeter where my problem was & corrected it short while later with key hole surgery.

Hope this hasnt put you off.

My Dad, in his eighties, has these done on a regular basis, and always refuses the sedation as it makes him feel groggy afterwards.

Me, I'd go for sedation every time, coz I'm a wuss!!!

I even had to have sedation recently when I had an MRI scan - I walked into the room, took one look at the machine, and passed out! (Strangely, I have had loads of operations over the years, and they have never stressed me out like those procedures do......)

If you are happy to go with the spray, I'd say go for it....

:rotfl: :rotfl:Well not for LazyDaisy! Can't understand why they had to sedate you if you'd already fainted though, might have been quicker to just position you and get snapping, in the hope you wouldn't wake up half way through!

Best of luck Margaret for Monday. Have appreciated your thoughts. Hope it goes well.
