It takes quite a while for things to heal after extractions and sockets can look a bit gunky.
You do really need to go to the dentist for aftercare though, its not really fair to be bothering GP's with this kind of stuff.

we are not able to offer medical advice.
On a money saving side, I would say that I've found buying Corsodyl mouth wash is cheaper from Tesco than from my dentist. Salty water makes cheap mouthwash too.

Lorian is correct - we can't offer medical advice on here.
however, there have been a number of cases like yourself and factual information has been given out, notably by the resident mse dentist Toothsmith. ;)I recommend that you do a search on this forum as you will find some useful help.
Hopefully Toothsmith will come along soon to reassure you!
Sounds like you are over the worst anyway.
I find that going to the dentist every 6 months means that I don't generally have any trouble, so that in turn makes the experience less scary, if you see what I mean.
ps I see you've had a reply from donteatthat, I've a feeling he/she's a dentist too (?) so I would take note of what they say.

Sorry guys, wasn't trying to offer medical advice here - in any case you can't really say what specific things are without the benefit of seeing the patient, so all you can do in the way of advice is say to go to see the dentist if there are any concerns.
GP's generally, (by their own admission) don't really know much about teeth so they can't always help much other than give antibiotics, which are not always useful.
As some general info regarding extractions though:
It takes around 14 days for the gum to close over the top of the socket.
It takes around 3 months for bone to fill in under the gum.
If you have a tooth out and you get a bad taste and a lot of pain it may mean the socket has an infection which needs a dressing, possibly also antibiotics.
Smokers heal more slowly and with more problems so avoid smoking before and after extractions.
The more difficult a tooth is to remove, the more likely having an infection afterwards.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this: Sorry, giving or asking for medical advice is not permitted on this forum as it’s not what this site is about. While discussing medical insurance policies, cheaper ways to see consultants, cashback for alternative health treatments and how to get specific medication cheaper (legally) are all perfectly acceptable we ask you specifically not to discuss what to do in the event of certain medical problems (please see this rule (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=31048) on the Health Board). If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com (abuse@moneysavingexpert.com).
No-one can tell what's going on in your mouth without seeing it!
