Gradual darkening using semi-permanent colours

I colour my hair every couple of months with a semi-permanent colour in a light brown shade (my hair is naturally light brown). It covers up the few grey hairs I have. I've been doing this for years.

The trouble is my hair is getting progressively darker and is now a very dark brown and although this has happened gradually, I don't want it as dark as this. My hair is quite long, so everytime I dye my hair, the ends get a bit more colour everytime. In fact the ends are darker than the roots - although it's not noticeable.

I want to lighten it a few shades, and know that I will have to use a permanent colour. I'm not sure if this is something I should attempt myself or go to a salon?

Have you tried just doing the roots......and then combing it through for the last few minutes or so.
You might need a friend to help you to do the roots, depends upon how flexible you are.
Or, maybe try a stronger shampoo to remove some of the existing colour and then use your chosen colour.

This is what I do now. But it seems it's too late for the rest of my hair, it's quite long so it must have years and years worth of semi permanent dye on it. :rolleyes:

I think the semi-permanent bit is a myth...it always takes ages to fade away on me.

Have you tried a stronger shampoo...I'm sure I read on here that Head and Shoulders was strong and could strip out colour....or was it Vosene... :confused:

Not on the grey bits tho!!! Mine seem to start showing after not too many washes!!!:rotfl:
