Mechanical Breakdown Cover - is it worth it?

I am buying a car from Cargiant – Peugeot 607 05 reg, 85,000 miles. Everything is electric\electronic – many things can go wrong. The full price is £7k and I am paying in cash.

Cargiant are offering a Mechanical Breakdown Cover from AA at a price of £459 for a year with max £500 claim at a time.

My questions are:

Is it worth ithttp://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/images/smilies/confused-smiley-013.gif? Do I need this cover at all?
If yes, shall I go for 3 years term (circa £800) or for one year?
If yes, shall I buy it from Cargiant or look elsewhere – Internet, etc?Any advise/views/experiences are very much appreciated.

Check the cost of a warrenty from Warrenty Direct.

It's difficult to say, without access to the breakdown statistics for this car, and I'd have thought the only people with that information are the Peugeot themselves.

So at the end of the day it's a gamble, it's a gamble MOST people do take, because most 3 year old vehicles on the road do not have extended warranties.

I don't think much of their max claim amount per claim!
I also don't think much of aftermarket warranties anyway, but then I've never had one. One frequently mentioned is the Warranty Direct (I think) as being ok, wait for a reply from others.

For me, I would never take out such expensive cover, with so many exclusions in the terms and conditions.

Have you considered auction for your car? Or autotrader from a private seller?

I reckon you'd save about £1,000 - £1,500 and you could use your savings to buy a warrantydirect if you really wanted to.

Ok I just looked at autotrader, no private sales on 2005 or younger cars, but found this one, just 1 year older same mileage, half the price!!!

I think that for a car with 85k miles the insurance will pretty much give you peace of mind for 3 years on all those little electronic faults that always emerge.

I have bought a car with the same mileage from them, accepting 3 year cover, but declining the gap cover (I also replied on your other thread).
